| In Hungary increasing number of coops have gone bankruptcy or split up after meeting new legal needs because of not being competitive under market conditions after radical reforms. Others, however, could maintain previous level of farming or even increase it. Former coop members and individual farmers have also established new coops using bottom up approach. The paper discusses the importance of leadership of coops with different background which not well addressed in the literature. It took into account that old type produce coops had not only been an economic unit but a social network of people as well giving a special character to the coop. | The paper investigates the selection mechanisms of rural development policy using a survey among farmers in the Southern Great Plain region characterising by the high level of unemployment and strong agricultural background. We focus on the farmers social-economic characteristics explaining of success of application for rural development subsidies employing selection and count models. Estimations show that the higher educated and older farmers more likely apply for rural supports, whilst the share of less favoured land affects negatively on the application for subsidy. | Since the late 1980s, agriculture in Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) has been under considerable adjustment pressure due to changing political, economic and institutional environments. | This study analyses the possible impacts of CAP reform on farm employment in an economically disadvantaged rural region in Hungary using survey among farmers. Results show that farmers are rather pessimistic about the employment effects of CAP reformy expecting a decrease in the number of farm jobs regardless of the type. Econometric analyses suggest that farm size in terms of area is positively related to the expected number of male employment on the farms, whilst the less favoured land has negative effects on the male employment except seasonal workers. | In Hungary radical reforms have meant that an increasing number of cooperatives have either fragmented or gone bankrupt because of not being competitive under current market conditions. | Over fifteen years have elapsed since the transition from the centrally planned economic system started in the early 1990’s. | The paper deals with organic produce in one of the largest and, concerning organic production one of the most diffused counties in Hungary, Pest County located in the north-central part of the country. Factors influencing farmers’ decision on adopting or not e.g. farm size, farm type, location, structure, market for organic products, existence of organic AEM were analysed. Hypotheses based on previous empirical literature were tested by a model explicitly accounting for the effects of farm-specific variables like age, education, size of farms and share of rented land.
