Les campagnes d'évaluation du stock de coquilles Saint-Jacques en Manche orientale : méthodologie et estimation des indices d'abondance ArchiMer

The methodology used for obtaining absolute abundance indices for Eastern Channel scallop is described in this paper. For the survey (COMOR), stratified multi-stage random sampling is used. The number of sampled units is computed based on variance estimates from the last survey. Knowledge of gear (Brittany dredge with a diving plate) selectivity and efficiency parameters is required for estimating total exploitable biomass and absolute abundance indices by age and strata. Details of the mathematical development of all estimators are given. A non parametric bootstrap provides confidence intervals for all estimates.

A Bayesian two-stage biomass model applied to the English Channel stock of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) ArchiMer

Among the English Channel fishery, the importance of cuttlefish stock has increased, following the cephalopods global landings and market trend. An adapted stock assessment model is needed in order to give good management advice with accurate uncertainties. Age based methods in this species are hampered by time consuming age determination with statoliths. A model requiring few data and adapted to the species life-history is therefore proposed. The SELEDRAG project was conducted in French territorial waters in May 2019. It was a short project, lead by the CNPMEM (French National Committee for Marine Fisheries), with Ifremer as scientific partner, and funded by “France Filière Pêche”. The context of the project is the French King Scallop fishery in the Eastern Channel, where 720 fishing boats are directly concerned by this species. Despite its importance, there is very little management for this species at the European level, but several binding rules for French fishermen in order to protect the stock, are not applicable to other countries. The English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod resource in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fishers. Depletion methods and age-structured models have been used to assess the stock, though they have shown limitations related to the model assumptions and data demand. A two-stage biomass model is, therefore, proposed here using, as input data, four abundance indices derived from survey and commercial trawl data collected by Ifremer and Cefas. De plus, dans certains gisements, l’accès à la pêcherie est soumis à des règles d’accès encore plus strictes (licences de pêche attribuées aux couples patrons/navires avec numerus clausus selon des caractéristiques techniques des navires et de leurs engins de pêche bien définies, contrôle de l'effort de pêche, maillages etc.). The VALMER project seeks to bridge this gap between theory and practice by looking at how ecosystem services assessment (ESA) can support marine management and planning. The annual assessment survey of the bay of Seine Pecten maximus scallop stock (COMOR44) took place from 4 to 23 July 2014. 183 dredges tows were carried out on the whole survey area. For all areas, the exploitable biomass consists only of 3 years and older scallops. The 2 years old scallops (cohort born in 2012) constituting the recruitment is virtually inexistent. Moreover, the observed growth is low for all adult individuals. The 1 year cohort is relatively abundant, their average size being in the average observed over the last 10 years. The global population is expected to increase again in 2015.

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer

The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. The Channel Programme: A Large-Scale Integrated Approach ArchiMer

The Channel programme is a collation of interlinked multidisciplinary projects supporting ecosystem-based management in the English Channel by integrating works carried out in the past thirty years including novel approaches to the spatial modelling of ecosystems. The Channel programme has required a coordination of efforts and expertise by both scientists and stakeholders to address the challenges of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and of its national implementations. The Channel programme has also consisted of harmonising information, regulations and habits in terms of ecosystem management in the English Channel.

Le golfe normand-breton est une zone d’activité intense pour la pêche française. En 2018, 640 navires français ont ainsi déclaré une activité de pêche dans cette zone. Les principales espèces exploitées sont des espèces non soumises à quotas européens, comme les gros crustacés, la coquille Saint-Jacques, le bulot, les petits bivalves, praire et amande. Les poissons, à l’exception notable de la dorade grise, ne constituent qu’une part relativement faible des débarquements totaux. La plupart des stocks de ces espèces se déclinent à l’échelle de la Manche Ouest, parfois davantage. The assessment of the King scallop stock of the Bay of Seine (Pecten maximus) was carried out in July 2018, in the Bay of Seine sensu stricto, located in French territorial waters (from the Normandy coast to the south to the limit of 12 nautical miles to the North), as well as the bordering zone lying north of this 12-mile limit and up to a latitude of 49°48N to the North, called "Extérieur Baie de Seine". For this, a scientific survey, based on a stratified random sampling plan, was conducted aboard the F/R Thalia, a coastal research vessel of the French Oceanographic Fleet. This scientific report describes the sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) fishery in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (France). A synthesis of knowledge on the biology and life cycle of this species is presented, as well as a history of the fishery. Using the data collected during the SPM2017-Hal scientific survey conducted in August 2017, as well as data from the professional fishery, both in Saint-Pierre and in Canada, an assessment of the sea cucumber stock and a diagnosis of the state of this stock are carried out. Management objectives for this stock, with a view to its sustainability, are proposed.
