Among the English Channel fishery, the importance of cuttlefish stock has increased, following the cephalopods global landings and market trend. An adapted stock assessment model is needed in order to give good management advice with accurate uncertainties. Age based methods in this species are hampered by time consuming age determination with statoliths. A model requiring few data and adapted to the species life-history is therefore proposed. An assessment of this stock was conducted in June 2015 by fitting a two-stage biomass model on a 22 years’ time-series (1992-2014). The use of a Bayesian framework is particularly adapted for decision making, allowing the propagation of uncertainty in the model. It also permits the use of different sources of... |

The SELEDRAG project was conducted in French territorial waters in May 2019. It was a short project, lead by the CNPMEM (French National Committee for Marine Fisheries), with Ifremer as scientific partner, and funded by “France Filière Pêche”. The context of the project is the French King Scallop fishery in the Eastern Channel, where 720 fishing boats are directly concerned by this species. Despite its importance, there is very little management for this species at the European level, but several binding rules for French fishermen in order to protect the stock, are not applicable to other countries. One of the French specificity is the ring size used, 92mm for all Scallop fisheries in France vs 85mm (or less) for UK fisheries. Another sharp divergence is... |

Among the English Channel fishery, the importance of cuttlefish stock has increased, following the cephalopods global landings and market trend. The stock is currently managed at regional scale but not by European regulations, although it is a shared species targeted by French and British fishing fleets at several stages of its life-cycle and across much of its distributional range. An assessment of this stock was conducted in June 2014 by fitting a two-stage biomass model on a 22 years’ time-series (1992-2013). As the assumptions of the model are based on a simplified life-cycle, it would be appropriate to compare the results with outputs from other models in order to obtain reliable biomass estimations. The final aim is to produce reliable management... |

The English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod resource in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fishers. Depletion methods and age-structured models have been used to assess the stock, though they have shown limitations related to the model assumptions and data demand. A two-stage biomass model is, therefore, proposed here using, as input data, four abundance indices derived from survey and commercial trawl data collected by Ifremer and Cefas. The model suggests great interannual variability in abundance during the 17 years of the period considered and a decreasing trend in recent years. Model results suggest that recruitment strength is independent of spawning-stock... |

While economic valuation of ecosystem services (ES) is widely acknowledged as a tool to support decision-making processes, studies have also shown that there exists a literature blindspot on the effective use of economic valuation (Laurans et al. 2013; Marco ne and Mongruel 2014). The VALMER project seeks to bridge this gap between theory and practice by looking at how ecosystem services assessment (ESA) can support marine management and planning. Natural scientists, economists and marine environment managers from various institutions undertook ESAs in six pilot sites over the two sides of the Channel. The objectives of this paper are to share some results of two French ESAs, and to discuss issues and perspectives of ESAs from a marine management... |

The annual assessment survey of the bay of Seine Pecten maximus scallop stock (COMOR44) took place from 4 to 23 July 2014. 183 dredges tows were carried out on the whole survey area. For all areas, the exploitable biomass consists only of 3 years and older scallops. The 2 years old scallops (cohort born in 2012) constituting the recruitment is virtually inexistent. Moreover, the observed growth is low for all adult individuals. The 1 year cohort is relatively abundant, their average size being in the average observed over the last 10 years. The global population is expected to increase again in 2015. |

The COMOR scientific cruises are aimed mostly at assessing directly the king scallop stock in the Seine Bay (listed deposit) and in the area located north of the listed deposit, and baptised "Proche Extérieur" (Close Outside). The assessment is based on a stratified random sampling scheme, each dragging accounting for one sample unit. The collected data enables the valuation of the abundance indexes par age class and area, the biomass available on each area, the demographic structure of the population, and the distribution of the population on the seabed. The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes.... |

The main aim of King scallops Pecten maximus stock assessment French surveys in the Bay of Seine (COMOR) is to set an annual primary diagnosis of the state of the resource (abundance by age classes, growth, distribution on the seabed) before the opening of the fishing season. For twenty years, the survey takes place in July, best compromise between enough growing of the group 1 shells, faster in the Bay of Seine than in the Saint-Brieuc Bay, allowing their capture by sampling dredges, and early expertise which allows to stakeholders (administrative, market organization, professional committee, ...) to take the best measures suited to the reality perceived through the survey’s results. The results are presented in distinguishing the off-shore part of the... |

This scientific report describes the sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) fishery in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (France). A synthesis of knowledge on the biology and life cycle of this species is presented, as well as a history of the fishery. Using the data collected during the SPM2017-Hal scientific survey conducted in August 2017, as well as data from the professional fishery, both in Saint-Pierre and in Canada, an assessment of the sea cucumber stock and a diagnosis of the state of this stock are carried out. Management objectives for this stock, with a view to its sustainability, are proposed. |
