GEOTRACES inter-calibration of the stable silicon isotope composition of dissolved silicic acid in seawater ArchiMer
Grasse, Patricia; Brzezinski, Mark A.; Cardinal, Damien; De Souza, Gregory F.; Andersson, Per; Closset, Ivia; Cao, Zhimian; Dai, Minhan; Ehlert, Claudia; Estrade, Nicolas; Francois, Roger; Frank, Martin; Jiang, Guibin; Jones, Janice L.; Kooijman, Ellen; Liu, Qian; Lu, Dawei; Pahnke, Katharina; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Schmitt, Melanie; Sun, Xiaole; Sutton, Jill; Thil, Francois; Weis, Dominique; Wetzel, Florian; Zhang, Anyu; Zhang, Jing; Zhang, Zhouling.
The first inter-calibration study of the stable silicon isotope composition of dissolved silicic acid in seawater, delta Si-30(OH)(4), is presented as a contribution to the international GEOTRACES program. Eleven laboratories from seven countries analyzed two seawater samples from the North Pacific subtropical gyre (Station ALOHA) collected at 300 m and at 1000 m water depth. Sampling depths were chosen to obtain samples with a relatively low (9 mmol L-1, 300 m) and a relatively high (113 mmol L-1, 1000 m) silicic acid concentration as sample preparation differs for low- and highconcentration samples. Data for the 1000 m water sample were not normally distributed so the median is used to represent the central tendency for the two samples. Median delta...

The silicon isotope composition of Ethmodiscus rex laminated diatom mats from the tropical West Pacific: Implications for silicate cycling during the Last Glacial Maximum ArchiMer
Xiong, Zhifang; Li, Tiegang; Algeo, Thomas; Doering, Kristin; Frank, Martin; Brzezinski, Mark A.; Chang, Fengming; Opfergelt, Sophie; Crosta, Xavier; Jiang, Fuqing; Wan, Shiming; Zhai, Bin.
The cause of massive blooms of Ethmodiscus rex laminated diatom mats (LDMs) in the eastern Philippine Sea (EPS) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) remains uncertain. In order to better understand the mechanism of formation of E. rex LDMs from the perspective of dissolved silicon (DSi) utilization, we determined the silicon isotopic composition of single E. rex diatom frustules (delta Si-30(E.rex)) from two sediment cores in the Parece Vela Basin of the EPS. In the study cores, delta Si-30(E.rex) varies from -1.23 parts per thousand to -0.83 parts per thousand (average -1.04 parts per thousand), a range that is atypical of marine diatom delta Si-30 and that corresponds to the lower limit of reported diatom delta Si-30 values of any age. A binary mixing...

Late Eocene onset of the Proto-Antarctic Circumpolar Current ArchiMer
Sarkar, Sudipta; Basak, Chandranath; Frank, Martin; Berndt, Christian; Huuse, Mads; Badhani, Shray; Bialas, Joerg.
The formation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is critical for the evolution of the global climate, but the timing of its onset is not well constrained. Here, we present new seismic evidence of widespread Late Eocene to Oligocene marine diagenetic chert in sedimentary drift deposits east of New Zealand indicating prolonged periods of blooms of siliceous microorganisms starting ~36 million years ago (Ma). These major blooms reflect the initiation of the arrival and upwelling of northern-sourced, nutrient-rich deep equatorial Pacific waters at the high latitudes of the South Pacific. We show that this change in circulation was linked to the initiation of a proto-ACC, which occurred ~6 Ma earlier than the currently estimated onset of the ACC at...

Assessment of seawater Nd isotope signatures extracted from foraminiferal shells and authigenic phases of Gulf of Guinea sediments ArchiMer
Kraft, Steffanie; Frank, Martin; Hathorne, Ed C.; Weldeab, Syee.
The radiogenic neodymium (Nd) isotope composition of foraminiferal shells provides a powerful archive to investigate past changes in sources and mixing of water masses. However, seawater Nd isotope ratios extracted from foraminiferal shells can be biased by contaminant phases such as organic matter, silicates, or ferromanganese coatings, the removal of which requires rigorous multiple step cleaning of the samples. Here we investigate the efficiency of Flow Through and batch cleaning methods to extract seawater Nd isotope compositions from planktonic foraminifera in a shelf setting in the Gulf of Guinea that is strongly influenced by riverine sediment inputs. Nd isotope analyses of reductively and oxidatively cleaned mono-specific planktonic foraminiferal...

The new IDP2017 is a significant improvement over the earlier IDP2014 and roughly doubles the number of included cruises, stations, samples and parameters. The IDP2017 is a truly international product containing data from 326 researchers from 25 countries. The IDP2017 provides data for the Pacific Ocean, and the Mediterranean and Black seas, in addition to Atlantic, Arctic and Indian Oceans that were already represented in the previous data product. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains significant amounts of biogeochemistry data as well as TEI data for aerosols and rain. As before, users can obtain complete IDP2017 data sets as bulk downloads. Alternatively, there is now a customisable online data extraction service that allows data selections by...

Asian dust input in the western Philippine Sea: Evidence from radiogenic Sr and Nd isotopes ArchiMer
Jiang, Fuqing; Li, Tiegang; Xu, Zhaokai; Li, Anchun; Frank, Martin; Chen, Tian-yu.
The radiogenic strontium (Sr) and neodymium (Nd) isotope compositions of the detrital fraction of surface and subsurface sediments have been determined to trace sediment provenance and contributions from Asian dust off the east coast of Luzon Islands in the western Philippine Sea. The Sr and Nd isotope compositions have been very homogenous near the east coast of the Luzon Islands during the latest Quaternary yielding relatively least radiogenic Sr (Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.70453 to 0.70491) and more radiogenic Nd isotope compositions (epsilon(Nd)(0) = +5.3 to +5.5). These isotope compositions are similar to Luzon rocks and show that these sediments were mainly derived from the Luzon Islands. In contrast, the Sr and Nd isotope compositions of sediments on the...

Constraints on ocean circulation at the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum from neodymium isotopes ArchiMer
Abbott, April N.; Haley, Brian A.; Tripati, Aradhna K.; Frank, Martin.
Global warming during the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) similar to 55 million years ago (Ma) coincided with a massive release of carbon to the ocean atmosphere system, as indicated by carbon isotopic data. Previous studies have argued for a role of changing ocean circulation, possibly as a trigger or response to climatic changes. We use neodymium (Nd) isotopic data to reconstruct short high-resolution records of deep -water circulation across the PETM. These records are derived by reductively leaching sediments from seven globally distributed sites to reconstruct past deep-ocean circulation across the PETM. The Nd data for the leachates are interpreted to be consistent with previous studies that have used fish teeth Nd isotopes and benthic...

Deoxygenation dynamics above the western Nile deep-sea fan during sapropel S1 at seasonal to millennial time-scales ArchiMer
Blanchet, Cécile L; Tjallingii, Rik; Schleicher, Anja M; Schouten, Stefan; Frank, Martin; Brauer, Achim.
Ocean deoxygenation is a rising threat to marine ecosystems and food resources under present climate warming conditions. Organic-rich sapropel layers deposited in the Mediterranean Sea provide a natural laboratory to study the processes that have controlled the changes in seawater oxygen levels in the recent geological past. Our study is based on three sediment cores spanning the last 10 thousand years (10 kyr BP) and located on a bathymetric transect offshore the western distributaries of the Nile delta. These cores are partly to continuously laminated in the sections recording sapropel S1, which is indicative of bottom-water anoxia above the western Nile deep-sea fan. We used a combination of microfacies analyses and inorganic and organic geochemical...

Rare earth element distribution in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean: The balance between particle scavenging and vertical supply ArchiMer
Hathorne, Ed C.; Stichel, Torben; Brueck, Bastian; Frank, Martin.
The concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) in seawater display systematic variations related to weathering inputs, particle scavenging and water mass histories. Here we investigate the REE concentrations of water column profiles in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, a key region of the global circulation and primary production. The data reveal a pronounced contrast between the vertical profiles in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and those south of the ACC in the Weddell Gyre (WG). The ACC profiles exhibit the typical increase of REE concentrations with water depth and a change in the shape of the profiles from near linear for the light REEs to more convex for the heavy REEs. In contrast, the WG profiles exhibit high REE concentrations...
