During the last years damage caused by plant parasitic nematodes in organic field vegetable farming has been observed with increasing attention. A general inquiry was started on farms with nematode problems to collect information about infestation, crop rotation and control strategies. Soil samples from 207 vegetable fields were taken from 55 farms in Germany and the detected nematodes were analysed. Seventeen different genera of plant parasitic nematodes were found. Nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus were found on 90 % of Meloidogyne on 50 % of the analysed fields - these two are the most important genera that damage vegetables. More than half of the infested fields were of sandy soils. Yield reductions of 50 % could be observed on 40 % of the fields... |

In an attempt to evaluate the occurrence and economic importance of plant-parasitic nematodes in organic farming in Germany, a survey was conducted with the main emphasis on vegetable and cereal production systems. For vegetables, the survey included quantification and identification of plant-parasitic nematodes in soil samples and a questionnaire for growers querying production factors and damage levels. For cereals, the survey focused on quantification and identification of plant-parasitic nematodes in soil and plant samples. Overall, Pratylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus were the most prominent nematode genera under both production systems with an incidence of over 90% of the samples. Meloidogyne was detected in 51% of the samples in both systems. Other... |

Matching nitrogen demand of plants and N release of organic fertilizers with respect to amount and timing is one key for successful cultivation of organic ornamentals. Thereby for plants with a low to moderate N demand growers can add the fertilizer as complete preplant application (CPA). For plants with a high N demand splitting fertilization in a reduced preplant application combined with an additional fertigation (RPA+F) is preferable. Aim of the current research was the investigation of N release of organic fertilizers in incubation experiments. Results of the incubation experiment were linked to a pot trial with pelargonium. Incubation experiments reveal that most fertilizers release about 40 to 50 % of total N and most nitrogen is released within... |
