Interesting records of whale epizoic crustaceans from the Dutch North Sea coast (Cirripedia, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Fransen, C.H.J.M..

First record of a pontoniine shrimp (Caridea, Palaemonidae) in association with a boring bivalve of the genus Spengleria (Bivalvia, Euheterodonta, Gastrochaenidae) Naturalis
Fransen, C.H.J.M.; Meij, S.E.T. van der.
During fieldwork in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia, in 2007, a pontoniine shrimp, most likely belonging to the genus Anchistus, was collected from a coral boring bivalve of the genus Spengleria. This is the first record of a pontoniine shrimp living in association with a boring bivalve. As it probably concerns a juvenile shrimp, its identity remains unclear. Its affinities with the Indo-West Pacific mollusc-associated genera and with congenerics are discussed.

The mushroom coral as a habitat Naturalis
Hoeksema, B.W.; Meij, S.E.T. van der; Fransen, C.H.J.M..
The evolution of symbiotic relationships involving reef corals has had much impact on tropical marine biodiversity. Because of their endosymbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) corals can grow fast in tropical shallow seas where they form reefs that supply food, substrate and shelter for other organisms. Many coral symbionts are host-specific, depending on particular coral species for their existence. Some of these animals have become popular objects for underwater photographers and aquarists, whereas others are hardly noticed or considered pests. Loss of a single coral host species also leads to the disappearance of some of its associated fauna. In the present study we show which mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) are known to act as hosts for other...

On two rare species of caridean shrimp from the hydrothermal fields Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge Naturalis
Fransen, C.H.J.M.; Biscoito, M.J..
During the DIVA-2 cruise (May 31 - July 4, 1994, see Desbruyères et al., 1994) and the PICO cruise (June 25 – July 11, 1998, N/O Nadir, PI: D. Desbruyères) to the Azores Triple Junction Area, two rare species of caridean shrimp were collected. Seven specimens of the pandalid Plesionika alexandri (A. Milne Edwards, 1883) were collected at the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field (37°20’N), and one specimen of the pontoniine Periclimenes kornii (Lo Bianco, 1903), at the Menez Gwen hydrothermal vent field (37°50’N). These hydrothermal vent fields are located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge SW of the Azores. Both species of shrimp are only known from a few specimens. The original description of Plesionika alexandri was based on an incomplete specimen. It is now...

Taxonomy, phylogeny, historical biogeography, and historical ecology of the genus Pontonia (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea: Palaemonidae) Naturalis
Fransen, C.H.J.M..
Species of the genus Pontonia Latreille, 1829, are distributed in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, living in association with either molluscan or ascidian hosts. In the present taxonomic revision, Pontonia sensu lato is divided into six genera: Pontonia sensu stricto; Ascidonia gen. nov., Rostronia gen. nov., Dactylonia gen. nov., Odontonia gen. nov., and Bruceonia gen. nov. A total of 29 species is described and figured, four of which are new to science: Pontonia pilosa spec. nov., Dactylonia holthuisi spec. nov., Odontonia rufopunctata spec. nov., and O. seychellensis spec. nov. The division in six genera is based on a stepwise phylogenetic analysis using morphological characters, performed using PAUP and McClade software. The...

Notes on the genus Bythocaris G.O. Sars, with the description of a new species Naturalis
Fransen, C.H.J.M..
During the CANCAP-5 expedition to the Azores (1981) a new species of Bythocaris was found. The new species is described and figured. It is compared with other members of the genus. A key to the species of Bythocaris is provided. The intra-specific morphological variation of B. payeri, B. leucopis and B. simplicirostris has been studied. The relevance of this intra-specific variation for distinguishing between species is discussed.

Fransen, C.H.J.M..
The present paper deals with the Anasca and Ascophora Imperfecta of the inland bays of Curaçao and Bonaire. Collections were made by P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK (1930, 1936/ 37, 1948/49, 1955, 1963/64, 1968, 1970, and 1973) and by the author (1982), and stored in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. A total of 25 species – almost all occurring in inland bays – are described here and fully illustrated. Six new species are established: Crassimarginatella harmeri. Scrupocellaria curacaoensis, Scrupocellaria carmabi, Scrupocellaria piscaderaensis, Scrupocellaria hildae and Bugula hummelincki. Attention is given to the ecology of the species. The bays have been compared as to species composition in relation to substrate and conditions...
