Modelisation numerique d'un couplage physico-biologique en milieu cotier ArchiMer
Marcer, R; Fraunie, P; Dekeyser, I; Andersen, V.
This study concerns the numerical simulation of the behaviour of pelagic systems in marine environments by means of a coupled biological and physical model. The physical model is based on the resolution of the Navier-Stokes, temperature and salinity equations in the 3 dimensions of space with a turbulent closure model consisting of 2 supplementary equations ( Kappa - epsilon model). The tridimensional biological model distinguishes 5 areas: phytoplankton (alive and dead); dissolved inorganic nitrogen; herbivores (essentially copepods); and zooplanktonic wastes (dead bodies and fecal pellets). Other than biological relations (nutrition, excretion,...), the sedimentation of biogenic particles (alive and dead phytoplanktonic cells, dead herbivores) are also...

Modeling 3D Rhone river plume using a higher order advection scheme ArchiMer
Arnoux-chiavassa, S; Rey, V; Fraunie, P.
Effects of discretization scheme on the numerical modeling of 3D Rhone River plume dynamics are investigated. A higher order scheme of total variation diminishing (TVD) type is used to discretize advection terms of both momentum and scalar equations. It is shown that this scheme widely damps the numerical diffusion and improves the representation of the dynamical and density fronts bounding the flow. It enables to accurately investigate the effects of the turbulent diffusion, which was previously masked by the numerical one. Numerical results are also compared to in situ data for two situations related to different wind conditions. For the case without wind stress, associated to supercritical values of the Richardson number, optimized turbulent...

The effects of a strong winter storm on physical and biological variables at a shelf site in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Cauwet, G; Charles, F; Courties, C; De Bovee, F; Dinet, A; Devenon, Jean-luc; Durrieu De Madron, X; Ferre, B; Fraunie, P; Joux, F; Lantoine, F; Lebaron, P; Naudin, Jj; Palanques, A; Pujo-pay, M; Zudaire, L.
A survey involving both permanent mooring and high frequency sampling was carried in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer during the fall of 1999 to assess the effect of strong and unpredictable meteorological events on the functioning of a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem. A severe winter storm took place on 12 November, which generated waves with a significant height of 7 m and a sea surface rise of about 0.5 m. The near-bottom current speed at 24 m reached 30 cm s(-1). This storm induced a significant increase in total suspended matter through resuspension and then a subsequent increase in gross sedimentation rates. It also resulted in an increase of the proportion of refractory particulate organic matter in the water column. It also tended to increase nutrient...
