Estimating body mass of fossil rodents Naturalis
Freudenthal, M.; Martín-Suárez, E..
Reconstructing the body mass of a fossil animal is an essential step toward understanding its palaeoecological role. Length × width (L×W) of the first lower molar (m1) is frequently used as a proxy for body mass in fossil mammals. However, among rodents, Muroidea have no premolar and an elongated m1, whereas other groups have a premolar and a m1 that is not elongated. This leads to an overestimation of body mass in muroids and/or an underestimation in other rodents. To solve this problem we assembled data of upper and lower tooth row length and body mass in extant rodents, and calculated regression equations for all rodents, rodents with premolars, rodents without premolars and for taxonomic groups at superfamily or family level. Data for complete tooth...

Preliminary report on a field campaign in the continental Pleistocene of Tegelen, the Netherlands Naturalis
Freudenthal, M.; Meijer, T.; Meulen, A. J. van der.
By means of modernized sieving techniques 110 m3 of matrix from a gully filling in the Tegelen Clay were sieved. This yielded a good collection of small mammals, which clarifies the stratigraphic position of the Tiglian, a collection of other vertebrates, a small collection of mollusks, and a vast amount of plant material. A good collection of mollusks was made through classical collecting techniques. The faunal lists in this paper constitute a considerable enlargement of the known Tegelen fauna. Collecting is continuing, and further additions to the fauna may be expected.

Fuenferrada 3, the first Eocene mammal locality in the depression of Montalbán (Teruel, Spain), with some remarks on the fauna of Olalla 4A Naturalis
Freudenthal, M..
The rodent fauna of Fuenferrada contains two species of Theridomyidae and three species of Gliridae. It is compared with the Early Oligocene fauna of Olalla 4A, and with the Late Eocene fauna of Aguatón 2D. The absence of Cricetidae serves to determine its age as latest Eocene.

Cricetidae (Rodentia) from the Neogene of Gargano (Prov. of Foggia, Italy) Naturalis
Freudenthal, M..
Hattomys, a new genus of Cricetidae, is described and three new species H. beetsi, H. nazarii and H. gargantua are attributed to it. Hattomys are very large cricetids, and the evolution of the genus is characterized by a considerable increase in size, and an increasing predominance of ridges over cusps. The supposedly oldest Gargano localities yielded, apart from the lineage H. beetsi-nazarii-gargantua, some scarce material of three other hamster species: a Megacricetodon, a Cricetulodon and a Cricetus. Comparison with the Spanish sequences of rodent faunas shows that the Gargano faunas probably are of late Turolian age, equivalent of the Messinian.

On the presence of Allophaiomys (Rodentia) in the Granada Basin (Spain) Naturalis
Agustí, J.; Castillo, C.; Freudenthal, M.; Suárez, E.M.; Peña, J.A..
Two sections in continental deposits of the Granada Basin, that had hitherto been described as being of Pliocene age, have yielded teeth of three species of Allophaiomys, which means they should be dated as Early Pleistocene.

Early Miocene Cricetidae (Rodentia, Mammalia) from Buñol (Prov. Valencia, Spain) Naturalis
Daams, R.; Freudenthal, M..
The Cricetidae remains from Buñol, collected by field parties of the Department of Paleontology (State University of Utrecht, The Netherlands), are described. Three previously known species have been recognized: Megacricetodon minor primitivus (Freudenthal, 1963), Democricetodon aff. hispanicus Freudenthal, 1967 and Fahlbuschia cf. koenigswaldi (Freudenthal, 1963). One new species is described: Eumyarion valencianum. The presence of M. m. primitivus points to an Early Miocene age (collongensis Assemblage-Zone).

Size variation of fossil rodent populations Naturalis
Freudenthal, M.; Cuenca Bescos, G..
Pearson's coefficient of variation is in general not applicable in palaeontology, due to the heterogeneity of samples. The heterogeneity may be due to the mixing of two species, mixture of material from various biotopes, or from a relatively large time span. A new coefficient of variation is proposed, based on the range of the sample. This coefficient may be used to estimate the degree of variation of a sample, and to decide whether it is homogeneous. Its application is tested empirically on a large number of samples of cricetid molars from the European Tertiary.

Neogene vertebrates from the Gargano Peninsula, Italy Naturalis
Freudenthal, M..
Fissure-fillings in Mesozoic limestones in the Gargano Peninsula yield rich collections of fossil vertebrates, which are characterized by gigantism and aberrant morphology. Their age is considered to be Vallesian or Turolian. The special features of the fauna are probably due to isolation on an island. The vertebrate bearing fissure deposits are covered by a calcarenite which is dated as probably Serravallian on the basis of Foraminifera. This would mean that the continental Turolian may be older than the marine Serravallian, a conclusion which is in contrast with the general idea on the correlation of marine and continental Miocene and Pliocene in Europe.

Aragonian : the stage concept versus Neogene mammal zones Naturalis
Daams, R.; Freudenthal, M..
The system of Neogene Mammal Zones, as originally created by Mein (1975), is discussed, and found to be confusing. The Aragonian in the type section and in the surrounding area is discussed, and the evolution of its fauna described in some detail. It appears dubious to apply the MN-zones to the faunules of the Aragonian type area. On the other hand, the type section may well serve as a basis for correlation of Miocene vertebrate localities in Spain and France and — may be — in other parts of Europe.

The Early Oligocene rodent fauna of Olalla 4A (Teruel, Spain) Naturalis
Freudenthal, M..
The rodent fauna of the locality Olalla 4A is composed of Theridomorpha, Cricetidae, Gliridae, and Sciuridae. A new genus of Cricetidae is described: Atavocricetodon, with three new species: Atavocricetodon atavoides sp. nov., A. nanoides sp. nov., and A. minusculus sp. nov. Two new species of Gliridae are described: Gliravus olallensis sp. nov. and Bransatoglis parvus sp. nov. Comparison with Montalban led to the description of yet another new species from that locality: A. hugueneyae. Discussion of the Olalla fauna shows that it must be younger than the 'Grande Coupure' and older than the classical locality of Montalbán, in other words Early Oligocene.

Entwicklungsstufen der miozänen Cricetodontinae (Mammalia, Rodentia) Mittelspaniens und ihre stratigraphische Bedeutung Naturalis
Freudenthal, M..
During the summer holidays of 1960 to 1963 a great many localities of Miocene and Pliocene mammals were discovered in the Southern part of Zaragoza province (Spain). Remains of both large and small mammals were found, the latter by sieving clays and marls. This small fauna consists mainly of Cricetodontinae, Gliridae, Sciuridae, Lagomorpha and Insectivora. The object of the present study is the Cricetodontinae. Other families of the same localities will be described by H. de Bruyn of the State University of Utrecht, Netherlands. The localities are situated along the S.W. border of the Calatayud-Teruel basin. Apart from small local faulting and folding along the margin of the basin the sediments are undisturbed. This circumstance and the nearly continuous...

The genus Pseudocricetodon (Cricetidae, Mammalia) in the upper Oligocene of the province of Teruel (Spain) Naturalis
Freudenthal, M.; Hugueney, M.; Moissenet, E..
Two new species of Pseudocricetodon are described: P. simplex sp. nov. is characterised by a simple dental pattern in the lower molars. It has been discovered almost simultaneously in Oligocene beds near Martín del Río (Teruel Basin) and near Alcorisa on the southern border of the Ebro Basin. P. adroveri sp. nov. had previously been described from Vivel del Río as P. aff. thaleri, and is characterised by a complex dental pattern. These two new species change the current ideas on the evolution of the genus Pseudocricetodon.
