AN APPLICATION OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS TO ALFALFA BIO-MASS ENERGY AND MARKETING COOPS AgEcon
Fruin, Jerry E..
Minnesota Valley Alfalfa Producers Cooperative (MNVAP), a farmer-owned cooperative based in west central Minnesota, has contracted to provide 75 megawatts of electric power produced from alfalfa stem biomass. The cooperative is considering a novel enterprise--the production of both electrical power and alfalfa leaf meal products from alfalfa hay. Seven hundred thousand tons of alfalfa hay from 200,000 acres grown by more than 1,000 farmers over twelve counties will need to be transported and separated into leaves and stems before power generation can occur. The alfalfa leaves would be used in various animal feeds ranging from 17% to 30% crude protein. Electrical power generated from this project will be more environmentally friendly than coal-based...

MODAL SHIFTS FROM THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND DULUTH/SUPERIOR TO LAND TRANSPORTATION AgEcon
Fruin, Jerry E.; Fortowsky, J. Keith.
Proposals to close the Minneapolis Upper Harbor, and convert the area to housing, light industry and recreational uses, would eliminate the barge movement of commodities to/from the Upper Harbor. Several proposals have assumed that this would also eliminate associated freight movement through this area of Minneapolis. However, there would still be a need to move materials such as sand and gravel, cement, steel products, and other construction materials into Minneapolis; and scrap metals from Minneapolis. Truck movements of grain, fertilizer and other commodities from/to northwest of Minneapolis would be rerouted over land through or around Minneapolis to utilize downstream harbors. This study estimates the private costs and public externality costs imposed...

BULK COMMODITY BARGE TRAFFIC ON ST. PAUL DISTRICT WATERWAYS IN 1985: PROJECTIONS AND IMPACTS AgEcon
Hill, Robert A.; Fruin, Jerry E.; Such, Carol.
This study was undertaken to determine the probable future movements of bulk commodities by barge to and from river ports in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' St. Paul District. The projected movements are analyzed in physical and economic terms useful to the formulation and evaluation of alternative river management plans.

U.S. CORN MOVEMENTS, 1985: A PRELIMINARY REPORT OF DATA AgEcon
Fruin, Jerry E.; Halbach, Daniel Walter; Hill, Lowell D.; Allen, Albert J..
This paper presents the results of the corn portion of the 1985 grain flow survey and makes comparisons with 1977 when the previous survey was done. The most significant change from 1977 was the increase in exports from the Pacific Northwest ports from 15 million bushels to over 290 million in 1985. This was accomplished by an increase in rail shipments from Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The decline in European Economic Community demand reduced corn movements through the Great Lakes and Atlantic ports and, consequently, truck movements to those ports. Trucks increased their share of domestic movements. The large 1985 corn crop and subsequent increase in stocks reduced the volume of interstate movements and the length of shipping distances....

THE IMPORTANCE OF BARGE TRANSPORTATION FOR AMERICA'S AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Fruin, Jerry E..
A healthy, shallow, draft barge industry is essential to the well-being of U.S. agriculture. Sixty percent of U.S. farm grain, oilseed and feed exports (which is 25 percent of the world trade in grain and oilseeds) is transported on the Mississippi River system. This low cost transportation system is also used to transport 25 percent of U.S. farm fertilizer and is important for other farm inputs. U.S. farm exports are a major factor in reducing our balance of payments deficit and maintaining the strength of the dollar.

AN ASSESSMENT OF THE COMPETITIVE POSITION OF GREAT LAKES PORTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL STEAM COAL MARKET AgEcon
Senf, David R.; Fruin, Jerry E..
This report, using a linear programming model to minimize total delivered world steam coal costs, analyzes future coal trade flows. Assessing the possibility of exporting Northern Great Plains coal through the St. Lawrence via the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin is the main goal of the study. World steam coal trade flows are projected for the years 1985, 1990 and 2000 through the linear programming model. The model includes demand from 25 coal importing nations and supply from 19 coal producing regions around the world.

Global Shifts in Agro-Industrial Capital and the Case of Soybean Crushing: Implications for Managers and Policy Makers AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Li, Bing; Fruin, Jerry E.; Hirsch, Rodolfo.
Tremendous shifts are occurring in the location of agro-industrial capital around the globe. To focus discussion on this topic a session was convened at the annual meeting of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association in Montreux, Switzerland in June of 2004. The session brought together researchers and industry leaders to better understand these dramatic shifts and the implications they hold for the agri-food system. The following article emerges from that session. The first part of the article provides the context for the discussion by looking at global shifts in soybean processing investment. The second part entails reaction by three industry panelists.

FILLING THE LIVESTOCK FEED TROUGHS OF MINNESOTA AND BEYOND AgEcon
Tiffany, Douglas G.; Fruin, Jerry E..
This study describes a portion of the grain production and movement patterns in Minnesota. 1999 levels of grain and oilseed production were identified as well as livestock populations in individual counties of the state. Animal scientists were consulted to ascribe typical consumption levels by the various livestock living in particular counties. A series of assumptions were required in order to determine the number of additional animals required to maintain sufficient breeding herds and flocks of livestock. Graphs were constructed to present the consumption levels of grain by livestock species in a statewide fashion. Tables provide detailed data to describe the consumption of feed grains and soybean meal by livestock in each county. Use of electronic...
