Effect of salinity on the quantity and quality of carotenoids accumulated by Dunaliella salina (strain CONC-007) and Dunaliella bardawil (strain ATCC 30861) Chlorophyta Biol. Res.
GÓMEZ,PATRICIA I; BARRIGA,ALEJANDRA; CIFUENTES,ANA SILVIA; GONZÁLEZ,MARIELA A..
Dunaliella salina and D. bardawil are well-known microalgae accumulating high levels of b-carotene under growth-limiting conditions. In both taxa, this pigment is primarily composed of the isomers 9-cis and all-trans. The 9-cis b-carotene occurs only in natural sources and is the most attractive from a commercial point of view. The conditions that enhance the preferred accumulation of 9-cis b-carotene in D. salina are controversial and they have not been well established yet. This study examined the effect of salinity on the quantity and quality of total carotenoids and b-carotene isomers accumulated by D. salina (strain CONC-007) and D. bardawil (strain ATCC 30861) grown in two media with different nutritional compositions (PES and ART) and at salt...

Ultrastructural and molecular characterization of Tetraselmis strains (Chlorodendrophyceae, Chlorophyta) isolated from Chile Gayana Botánica
GONZÁLEZ,MARIELA A.; AGUAYO,PAULA A.; INOSTROZA,INGRID DE L.; CASTRO,PABLO A.; FUENTES,GLENDA A.; GÓMEZ,PATRICIA I..
Species of the genus Tetraselmis (Chlorodendrophyceae, Chlorophyta) have traditionally been used in aquaculture facilities as food for larval varieties of marine organisms. Recently, some strains with high lipid content have been considered as having potential for biofuel production. Although many Tetraselmis species are relatively well-characterized using light and electron microscopical methods, there are still taxonomic ambiguities among the species. DNA sequence analysis, which provides a reliable and more convenient tool for species delimitation, has been poorly used in Tetraselmis. In this study, three strains of Tetraselmis, isolated from coastal Chilean waters, have been characterized using an integrative approach (light and electron microscopy,...

Culture and growth of two benthic diatoms species isolated from the Salar del Huasco (North of Chile, 20° S) at different conditions of temperature, light and nutrient Gayana Botánica
RAMÍREZ,EIMMY E.; GONZÁLEZ,MARIELA A.; CIFUENTES,ANA S.; INOSTROZA,INGRID; URRUTIA,ROBERTO E..
Benthic diatoms are cultured usually under laboratory conditions to be used as a food source for other organisms, of aquaculture interest or for biotechnological applications. Laboratory experiments demonstrate the incidence of the physical and chemical variables on abundance and growth rates of diatoms. While macronutrients are usually selected and dosed into common culture mediums to meet the general requirements of a wide range of diatoms, the availability and optimization of micronutrients are more susceptible to each organism’s particular physiological conditions. The aim of this study was to characterize the growth of two species of benthic diatoms isolated from the Salar de Huasco in batch cultures at different conditions of temperature...
