Rupelian (middle Oligocene) fish otoliths from the clay pit 'De Vlijt' near Winterswijk, The Netherlands Naturalis
Gaemers, P.A.M.; Hinsbergh, V.W.M. van.
A large, interesting otolith fauna from the Middle Oligocene was found in the clay pit 'De Vlijt' near Winterswijk by sifting large quantities of clay and by collecting large loose specimens in the clay pit. Thirty-five species and one subspecies were indentified; nine species are new, viz. Clupeiformorum planus, Congridarum trapezioides, Gadichthys altus, Palaeogadus compactus, Brotulidarum phaseoloides, Paralabrax splendens, Dentex kokeni, Carangidarum robustus, and Acropomidarum martini. The study of part of Koken's type material was very helpful for the identification of many species. Photographs have been included of important specimens in Koken's collection. The fauna, in which Argentinidae, Gadidae, Brotulidae, and Ophidiidae dominate, is indicative...

Attempts to predate on gadid fish otoliths demonstrated by naticid gastropod drill holes from the Neogene of Mill-Langenboom, The Netherlands Naturalis
Gaemers, P.A.M.; Langeveld, B.W..
Incomplete drill holes produced by naticid snails are occasionally found in late Cenozoic gadid otoliths from the North Sea Basin. Among the Neogene otoliths found at Mill-Langenboom naticid drill holes are relatively common. Their occurrence is linked to strata that formed under reduced rates of sedimentation and/or that reflect non-sedimentation and erosion. The Upper Miocene–Upper Pliocene deposits at Mill-Langenboom (province of Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands) constitute a condensed sequence comprising most North Sea Basin stages of this interval from the Gramian to the end of the Pliocene, as demonstrated by index taxa amongst gadid otoliths, with a considerable hiatus between Miocene and Pliocene strata. The lag deposit at the base of the Pliocene...

New Gadiform Otoliths from the Tertiary of the North Sea Basin and a revision of some fossil and recent species Naturalis
Gaemers, P.A.M..
Otoliths of 10 new species, including nine Gadidae from different localities in the North Sea Basin (Middle Oligocene — Upper Pliocene) are described: Gadus parallelus, Trisopterus concavus, T. incognitus, Colliolus parvus, C. johannettae, C. schwarzhansi, Palaeoraniceps regularis, Molva primaeva, Brosme heinrichi and ? Macruridarum deurnensis. Three new genera are established: Protocolliolus, Neocolliolus and Palaeoraniceps. Type material of some fossil otoliths of Gadidae described by Koken (1884, 1891) has been studied; as a result some systematic errors are corrected. The existence of two recent species of coal-fishes (Pollachius virens (L.) and Pollachius carbonarius (L.)) is ascertained by study of their otoliths.

Fisch-Otolithen aus dem Pliozän von Antwerpen (Belgien) und Ouwerkerk (Niederlande) und aus dem Plio-Pleistozän der Westerschelde (Niederlande) Naturalis
Gaemers, P.A.M.; Schwarzhans, W..
53 species are listed from the Pliocene of Antwerp (Belgium) and a boring at Ouwerkerk (Netherlands) and from the Pliocene and Pleistocene of the West Scheldt (Netherlands; a few dredged specimens). Only five were previously known from Antwerp. Descriptions of 13 new species: Trisopterus elongatus, T. pliocenicus, Micromesistius hochti, Melanogrammus conjunctus, Trachinus angustus. Otophidium compactum. Ammodytes rostratus, Gobius ornatus, (Gobiidarum) modestus, (G.) dorsoconcavus, (G.) bicornutus, (G.) rectangularis and Oncocottus asper, and three new subspecies: Gadichthys benedeni verticalis, Carapus nuntius elongatus and Ammodytes lanceolatus sculptus, are given. Within the family of the Gadidae three new genera are established, Colliolus, Gadichthys...

Bonefish-otoliths from the Anversian (Middle Miocene) of Antwerp Naturalis
Gaemers, P.A.M..
31 species are listed from the Anversian in the neighbourhood of Antwerp (Belgium). Nine were previously known and one recorded species could not be found again. The relative abundances of the species are discussed, especially with reference to Trisopterus friedbergi and small species. The faunas from the ‘Zanden van Antwerpen’ (Sands of Antwerp) and the ‘Zanden van Edegem’ (Sands of Edegem), which make up the Anversian, are compared: the latter is older and the fauna preferred an environment close to the coast or shallow marine; the former, younger formation was formed in slightly deeper water further from the coast. The numerous otoliths of deep-sea fishes in the Sands of Antwerp must be allochthonous, although how these otoliths came to be there is...
