The present paper describes the major results obtained from 1989 to 1992 by the EUROMODEL group in studying the circulation in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Particular emphasis has been given to the physical processes responsible for seasonal and mesoscale variabilities. Observations (in situ and satellite), together with theoretical, physical and numerical models, have been widely used in the course of these studies. Attention has been focused on the dynamics of the northern basin (deep water formation, dynamics of the Northern Mediterranean Current, circulation and shelf/slope interaction in the Balearic Sea) and of the southern basin (Alboran Sea circulation, instabilities of the Algerian Current). The straits dynamics have been studied with particular... |

The Balearic basin is a semi-enclosed basin located in the western Mediterranean Sea, connecting the Gulf of Lions and the Alboran basin. While the characteristics and circulation of the water masses have been rather well established, the exchanges with adjacent basins, essential to our understanding of the circulation in the western Mediterranean and for validating outputs of general circulation models, have never been determined in detail. We present here the data from the FE-89 (June 1989) Spanish cruise, during which high-resolution CTD and ADCP measurements were performed on the open boundaries of the Balearic basin. The fluxes for all the boundaries were calculated in a quasi-synoptic fashion. The values found in the Ibiza and Mallorca channels... |

The Liguro-Provenco-Catalan or Northern Current, which contours the continental slope of the north-western Mediterranean Sea, has been described as a permanent flow affected by important variability at different scales. Many observations indicate a higher flux in winter than in summer, while the occurrence of mesoscale events appears to be a common characteristic. The opportunity of examining several years of current meter data at a location close to the inner border of the Northern Current has definitively demonstrated the existence of a seasonality in the mesoscale variability. Although the records do not concern the core of this current, the consistency of the several characteristics we have determined with results found by other authors in the Ligurian... |
