Pesca comercial de anchoíta bonaerense (Engraulis anchoita) entre 1993 y 2011 OceanDocs
Garciarena, A.D.; Buratti, C.C..
The fishing activity on Argentine anchovy Northern stock (34º S-41º S) during the 1993-2011 period was studied (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data derived from the commercial fleet catch records. Annual landings reached a minimum of 5,900 t in 1999 and a maximum of 36,300 t in 2004. The largest catches, performed by the offshore ice chilling fleet, averaged 11,800 t. As of 2003 it was observed an increase in the coastal ships share and a decrease in that of the inshore fleet that in 2004-2011 represented less than 3% of total landings. The major activity, developed between 37º S-41º S in the August-November period, had Mar del Plata as the main port of landing. The average catch per trip and the mean HP of ships, that as of 1999 increased in...

Recomendación de capturas biológicamente aceptables de anchoíta patagónica (Engraulis anchoita, 41º S-48º S) durante 2012 OceanDocs
Hansen, J.E.; Buratti, C.C.; Garciarena, A.D..
Advise on Biologically Allowable Catch (BAC) for Southern Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita, 41° S-48° S) during 2012. To assess the evolution since 1990 and the current status of Argentine anchovy Southern stock, an Age Structured Population Model (ASPM) was used. Modeling of catches according to a four-month period pulses allowed to predict annual yields so as to get them close to the nominal catches officially recorded. Some independent indexes of stock abundance (eight acoustic estimates of total biomass and five estimates of spawning stock biomass obtained with the Daily Egg Production Method) and the proportion of individuals per age group assessed during the same cruises were used to calibrate the fitting. No stock-recruitment function but a...

Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) landings corresponding to November 2003-January 2004 and November 2004-January 2005 fishing seasons were analyzed at the Mar del Plata port (Argentina, SW Atlantic). Fourty one samples were taken to measure total length exclusively and 4 sub-samples to record individual data (total length, weight, sex, sexual stage, age according to otoliths reading). Total length ranged 20-50 cm (1 and 8 years old). The most abundant sizes, between 32-37 cm, corresponded to ages 3 and 4, respectively. Most of the fish caught were adult (95%) and mature (85%) specimens. Length-weight, length-age relations were calculated and length-growth, weight-growth parameters estimated. The catch per unit of effort, of high variability (0-2,455 kg...

Reta, R.; Perrotta, R.G.; Garciarena, A.D..
Results obtained during a research cruise carried out along the coastal area of Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in November 1999 are presented. The objective of the research cruise was to estimate chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance with acoustic methods and establish its relation to the hydrographic conditions. The information gathered was complemented with data of catches obtained by a commercial vessel that operated simultaneously in the study area. Environmental data from other research cruises and satellite information were also taken into account to obtain contemporary sea surface temperature and wind speed and direction data. The main species of catches of the research cruise and commercial vessel were horse mackerel (Trachurus...

Análisis de las capturas de atunes realizadas por dos buques pesqueros de Mar del Plata, Argentina, entre enero y abril de 2010 OceanDocs
Garciarena, A.D..
Data obtained by observers on board of two fishing vessels during six trips carried out between January-April 2010 to catch tuna were analyzed. Thirty-four fishing days were completed and of the 59 trawls performed 37 turned out positive (with tuna catches). The fishing gear consisted of a purse seine net. Exploitation took place within the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone, between 36° S-39° S. The main landings occurred in March and consisted of slender tuna, Allothunnus fallai (57%), followed by albacore, Thunnus alalunga (28.5%), in January and bonito, Sarda sarda (14%), in April. Sea surface temperature ranged 16 °C-19 °C. A total of 25 length frequency samples allowed to measure individuals of the species above mentioned and those of skipjack...

Perrotta, R.G.; Garciarena, A.D.; Hernandez, D.R..
Chub mackerel caught by the commercial fleet in El Rincón (39°-41° 30’ S) and Mar del Plata (38° S) areas was analyzed. In 2001 and 2002 samples from El Rincón were obtained from landings or collected by scientific observers on board the commercial ships. Samples from Mar del Plata were acquired during the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 fishing seasons, on board two vessels of the small purse-seine fleet. Landings were mostly adults and only a small fraction of juveniles was observed (< 5%). Length growth parameters from El Rincón samples were estimated, and length-weight and length-age relationships were fitted by Least Squares. The results were as follows: L(mm) = 538.4; k (years-1) = 0.122; t0 (years) = -4.92; Pt = 4*10-7 * Lt 3.536. Natural mortality was...
