Coupling physical and biogeochemical processes in the Rio de la Plata plume ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Dadou, Isabelle; Dumas, Franck; Lazure, Pascal; Garcon, Véronique.
A coupled three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical model was developed in order to simulate the ecological functioning of the Rio de la Plata estuary and plume. The biogeochemical model reproduces the nitrogen cycle between five compartments: dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus and dissolved organic nitrogen. The coupling is tested in seasonal climatological configurations and for the particular year 1999. The circulation is forced with Parana and Uruguay rivers discharges, NCEP wind and tide. The biogeochemical model includes loads of inorganic and organic nitrogen from both rivers. The model reproduces the correct tidal amplitudes in the estuary, as well as the most outstanding features of the observed horizontal and...

Use of SeaWiFS data for light availability and parameter estimation of a phytoplankton production model of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Gohin, Francis; Delmas, Daniel; Lunven, Michel; Garcon, Véronique.
Processing SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) data provides useful information for the observation and modelling of the phytoplankton production of the Bay of Biscay. Empirical algorithms allow the retrieval of chlorophyll a and non-living Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations. These data are used to constrain a coupled 3D physical-biogeochemical model of the Bay of Biscay continental shelf Two issues are investigated, depending on the variable used, to constrain the winter to spring phytoplankton production for the year 2001. First, SPM data is used as forcing data to correct the corresponding state variable of our model. This allows the realistic simulation of the light limited bloom at the end of February 2001, as observed with...

Transports of the Brazil and Malvinas currents at their confluence ArchiMer
Maamaatuaiahutapu, Keitapu; Garcon, Véronique; Provost, Christine; Mercier, Herle.
Geostrophic transports of the western boundary currents at the Brazil/Malvinas Confluence in the South Atlantic Ocean are estimated from the data set of the Confluence 3 cruise (February 1990) with a nonlinear inverse model which takes into consideration density, current meter and wind data, and dynamical (planetary vorticity, Ekman, mass conservation) constraints. Inversions are carried out with two initial different levels of no motion at 1500 m (Case A) and at 3000 m (Case B). Consistencies of the water volume transports provided by both inversions are analyzed and compared to previous estimates. Current meter constraints are applied in the Malvinas Current region where a total transport of 45 +/- 7 Sv (1 Sv = 10(6) m(3) s(-1)) is given by both...
