This paper contains a description of the Lepidoptera, exclusive of the Tortricidae, Tineidae, Orneodidae, and Pterophoridae, of t he Seychelles Archipelago, and of the coral islands of Aldabra, Assumption, Cosmoledo and Astove, though the collections from the three latter islands are too small to be considered representative. The collections from the Seychelles were obtained very largely by Mr Hugh Scott, who spent eight months (July 1905-March 1909) in the group and devoted the whole time to entomological collecting. Men of science have always been attracted by the study of the former distribution of land and water upon our globe. We see continual modifications caused by the action of large volumes of water upon its shores, also by rain and wind, by heat and frost, by subterranean explosions, and so forth. We are led, in the hope of prophesying the future, to enquire to what extent these agencies are at work in altering the face of the habitable world at the present time. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

In the following pages sorne account is given of 20 species of Nemerteans from the Eastern Indian Ocean. In addition to those collected by the Percy Sladen Expedition, we bave been able to examine a collection made by Mr. Oyril Crossland at and near Zanzibar, and also a few procured by Professor Herdman from Ceylon. To these two gentlemen we desire to express our thanks. Other specimens reached us besides those described below, but owing to their imperfect condition or to their unsatisfactory preservation we have not included them in our account. The scope of the sub-order Sigmatotetraxonida is here greatly enlarged by the inclusion therein of the Lithistidae and Clavulidae, and the group as now constituted is by far the largest of the tetraxonid sub-orders, being represented in the " Sealark " collection by no less than 126 species. Of this total 57 species are here described as new, 65 are identified with previously known species (in some cases as new varieties ) and 4 are identified generically only. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

While engaged in 1906 and 1907 in working up t he collections obtained by the Expedition of 1905 in the Seychelles Archipelago, it became obvious that a further expedition would be necessary to t hose islands, to trace with a proper degree of accuracy their relationship to the Indian and African Continents as weIl as to the great island of Madagascar.
