NOTES ON THE MARINE ALGAE OF THE INTERNATIONAL BIOSPHERE RESERVE SEAFLOWER, CARIBBEAN COLOMBIA IV: NEW RECORDS OF MACROALGAL EPIPHYTES ON THE SEAGRASS THALASSIA TESTUDINUM Boletín de Investigaciones
Albis-Salas,Margarita Rosa; Gavio,Brigitte.
Nine species of macroalgae are newly reported for the Caribbean International Biosphere Reserve Seaflower. Of these taxa, Neosiphonia sphaerocarpa, Polysiphonia schneideri, Polysiphonia sertularioides, Cladosiphon occidentalis, and Phaeophila dendroides, have been previously reported from Colombian waters, whereas Ulothrix sp., Ulva flexuosa subsp. paradoxa, Chaetomorpha minima, and Cladophora liniformis represent new records for the country. All the algae were found growing epiphytically on Thalassia testudinum in shallow (<1 m) seagrass meadows around San Andrés Island. Their morphological features are discussed.

NOTES ON THE MARINE ALGAE OF THE INTERNATIONAL BIOSPHERE RESERVE SEAFLOWER, CARIBBEAN COLOMBIA V: FIRST STUDY OF THE ALGAL FLORA OF QUITASUEÑO BANK Boletín de Investigaciones
Gavio,Brigitte; Cifuentes-Ossa,Maria Alejandra; Wynne,Michael J.
During a biodiversity expedition to the northern cays of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Old Providence and Saint Catalina, we collected macroalgal samples along Quitasueño Bank, a submerged 60 km-long coralline bank. This is the first phycological study on the bank. We present a preliminary list of 76 macroalgae, including ten species of cyanobacteria. Fifteen of these taxa are new records for Colombia, and an additional nine are new records for the Archipelago. With this preliminary study, we increase the number of taxa in the macroalgal flora of this region of Colombia by 10.1%.

Community structure of turf algae in interactions with massive corals in Tayrona National Natural Park, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez-Cubillos,Catalina; Gavio,Brigitte; Zea,Sven.
ABSTRACT Algal turfs are currently the most abundant benthic component on most coral reefs. Their wide distribution, functional role and positive response to factors that stress corals confirm their importance in the functioning of reef ecosystem. It has been shown that species composition, structural development and sediment retention influence their capacity to kill and displace adjacent live coral tissue. In this study in two reefs of the Tayrona National Natural Park (Colombian Caribbean), the variation in structure of turfs growing on and in direct interaction with massive live corals was determined, and its structural complexity was related with its sediment retention capacity. For that, the taxonomical composition was determined, and canopy height,...

Trash in paradise: marine debris on the beaches of San Andrés Island, Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gavio,Brigitte; Vargas-Llanos,July Paulin; Mancera-Pineda,José Ernesto.
ABSTRACT San Andres Island is one of the main touristic places in Colombia, and its main attractions are its sandy beaches and the marine coastal ecosystems, such as coral reef and seagrass beds. However improper behavior of both residents and tourists on solid residue disposal may threaten not only the aesthetic of the island´s beaches, but also poses risk to marine life. The objective of this research was to assess the amount of litter on the main beaches of the island. We surveyed three popular beaches for ten weeks. We collected 9894 units of litter, equivalent to a weight of 23 212.47 g. Beach cleanliness was estimated using the Clean Coast Index, and two of the three sites resulted “extremely dirty”, while the third was classified as “dirty”. The...
