Group housing of calves is an animal-friendly natural and economic way of raising calves. One major disadvantage of artificial milk feeding in group housing systems, however, is the incidence of cross-sucking. The main objective of this study was the evaluation of tructural and technical modifications of the feeding stall of an automatic teat feeder and the environmentally enriched feeding area in relation to a reduction of cross-sucking after finishing a milk meal. The experiment was carried out with 168 female calves (German Holstein) of one origin randomly assigned to two treatments: control group and optimized group with a furnished post feeding area and an exercise yard with environmental enrichment. Calves were fed by an automatic teat feeder... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the rearing method on heart rates (as stress indicator) in the first days of lactation during milking. Heart rate was measured in two cows (K) and in eight heifers, four (F) reared with an automatic teat feeder, four (FKK) reared naturally by suckler- or foster cows. Heart rate was evaluated with a POLAR heart rate monitor on day one and nine of lactation during the milking procedure. The respective heart rates could be assigned to the events in the milking parlour via videoanalysis. Between the two heifer groups there were no physiologically relevant differences in heart rates on the two observed days. Both heifer groups showed higher heart rates on day one compared with day nine. Group K showed lower... |

Weaning of goat kids is in many cases a psychic and physiological strain for both, kids and dams. Frequently goat kids suffer from a decline of performance, e. g. of weight gain. An alternative could be a gradually weaning considering colostral period of 1 week as well as feeding whole milk according EU-Organic-Farming regulation for a period of 45 days. The aim of the study was to compare abrupt weaning (ML) after 45 days of mother bonded rearing with restricted suckling (RL) three times per day before weaning. As a method to asses stress responses in goat kids, heart rate variability (HRV) was measured as basal values before and after weaning. The results show that the overall variability (SDNN) of heart rate variability (HRV) for RL was significantly... |

The production of sheep and goat milk in professional farming has become more important in the last decade. However, concrete underlying data are so far incomplete. Thus the aim of the system analysis was the accumulation of data and knowledge about sheep and goat milk production in Germany. Production processes and factors on farms are to be recorded as well as information about players in the processing and marketing sector. Through research, questionnaires and interviews with farmers, processors, commercial representatives and experts it was possible to generate a conclusive overview of this young sector. One outcome was a high proportion of organic farming (65% of dairy goat, 67% of dairy sheep farms). While there is much optimism with regards to... |

Dairy goat farming is a growing market in animal husbandry in Germany. Due to this expansion, farmers special advice on health, feeding and housing is growing as well. Thus a project was initiated to assess welfare and housing systems three times in three and a quarter year on 40 dairy goat farms in Germany. The main goal was to benchmark welfare concept on the same farms. In the first assessment, 1876 lactating goats in total were assessed on 40 farms. From a set of 22 animal based indicators in total, 8 showed a higher prevalence than 5 %: moderate and severe claw overgrowth, mild udder lesions, small udder scars, moderate udder asymmetry, swellings, head lesions, hairless patches and avoidance distance test. Interestingly, not more than 1.6 % of... |

Group housing is a natural and economic way of raising calves. One major disadvan-tage of group housing calves is the occurrence of cross-sucking as an abnormal behaviour. The main objective of our study on organic calf housing was the reduction of cross-sucking related to milk feeding. A new feeding stall with automatic gates was attached to an automatic teat feeder. One gate opened to an enriched area immedi-ately when the calves had finished their milk meal. In this zone calves could use rub-ber teats or a hay net (treatment optimized). The design for the control group used a simple feeding stall without attached enriched zone. 168 female calves (German Holstein) from one origin (herd) were randomly assigned to 14 groups with 12 calves each. Thus, each... |

Ammonia emissions from barns have a severe impact on the environment. Especially dairy cattle, kept in loose housing, contribute to the total emission of ammonia up to 50%. Soiled walking areas like slatted floors, are realised as one of the main sources of the emission. In this study, a special cleaning device was used in order to remove manure from a slatted floor in an organically run dairy barn. It was investigated how the combination of a rubber-scraper, mechanical star discharge rotors and high-pressure water nozzles affects the ammonia emission from the floor. Six concrete test elements (55cm x 62cm x 20cm) were cut out of the existing slatted floor in order to be able to separate them from other sources of ammonia emission in the barn. With a... |

In contrast to the increasing demand for dairy goat products in Germany, a market for goat kid meat as a related product is more or less non-existing. Thus, the objective of our study was to develop a concept for organic goat kid meat production for dairy goat farms. In collaboration with a wholesaler, organic dairy goat farmers and marketing research the experimental part of our study was to find out if cross-breeding of meat-goats could improve meat quality and performance of fattening goat kids together with other factors like concentrate ratio of the diet, housing system as well as raising strategy. First results indicate that a low input level of concentrates of 10 % of total dry matter intake per goat kid and year is not sufficient to meet the... |

In organic dairy farms, calves stay with their mother usually for two days after calving. This is not different from conventional dairy farms. During the last years the interest to alter this fact has steadily increased. Farmers expect an improvement of the health of the calves and to spare labour time as well: calves get their milk at the right time with the right temperature and a low content of bacteria. However, suckling influences the process of machine milking and the milk quality, too. This study investigated these correlations. Cows – suckling and milking – were compared with other cows which had no or only reduced contact to their offspring. Every group contained ten cows. Over a period of 8 weeks milk flow curves were weekly gained.... |

To assess animal behaviour of goat kids on pasture, a real time positioning system, Ubisense 7000, was installed mobile and outdoors. One major goal of the study was to analyse time goat kids spent in functional areas like pasture, fodder hedges or hutch, the other goal was the feasibility of the positioning system regarding positioning of goats on pasture. Results show, that grazing periods happen even during the night, whereas fodder hedges were used only during daytime. Accuracy of the positioning concerning Euclidian geometry was around 15 cm, which is according manufacturer’s data. |

Ammonia emissions are an important problem in agricultural systems. Organic pig production raises a claim to offer high animal welfare. However, gaseous emissions can exhaust out of outdoor runs. Many measurement technics to determine the ammonia volatilization in animal facilities exist. In outdoor runs it is necessary to define the air volume flow. In addition, the contaminated surface of the pig-yard is heterogeneous. Therefore, it is interesting if the ammonia concentration correlate with the amount of manure. The outdoor run has been divided in a matrix. The ammonia concentrations are determined with a multi-gas monitor (INNOVA 1312) in combination with a dynamic chamber. The study showed a difference in ammonia volatilization between roofed and... |
