| Mozambique is situated on the east coast of Africa between 10°27´S and 26°52´S latitude and has a coastline of 2,780 Km, which can be divided into three regions: The Northern region (characterised by the occurrence of corals and rocks); the Central region (sandy) and the Southern region (composed of dunes). Partly, this division determines the distribution and the potential of the marine ecosystems, their access and also influence the choice of fishing methods and equipment. In Mozambique, fishing is a highly ranked activity not only for the absorption of the local labour force but also for the provision of aquatic protein products to the local populations and earning hard currency for the country.
