Analysing Family Farm Succession: A Probit and a Competing Risk Approach AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Tietje, Hendrik; Weiss, Christoph R..
The present study examines family and farm characteristics affecting the choice and the timing of intergenerational farm transfers. Using survey data which are linked to accounting data for 272 farms in Northern Germany, we use a probit approach to examine whether specific farm and family characteristics are related to the likelihood of succession within a given period. We go beyond the existing literature by applying a competing risk approach to study the process and thus the timing, respectively of the two competing events – succession or exit from farming. We find that farm characteristics significantly influence succession considerations to the extent that they affect the value of the farm for the potential successor.

The Persistence of Poverty in Rural China: Applying an Ordered Probit and a Hazard Approach AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Herzfeld, Thomas; Wang, Xiaobing.
The present study investigates the analysis of poverty persistence of Chinese farm households in the well-off Zhejiang province in the southeast. We firstly apply an ordered probit model examining household, farm, and regional characteristics affecting the probability that households are chronically poor. In addition, we apply a hazard approach to identify the risk of falling into and climbing out of poverty. Results indicate that there are increasing chances to climb out of poverty over time, and that the risk of falling into poverty seems to decrease after the household spent some time outside poverty.

FARM SUCCESSION PLANS AND ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR: EVIDENCE FROM A HOUSEHOLD SURVEY AND CENSUS DATA AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Tietje, Hendrik; Weiss, Christoph R..
This study examines family farms and characteristics affecting farm succession. Based on a farm survey, three aspects of succession are analysed in the paper: the probability of family succession; the likelihood of having a successor designated; and the timing of succession. Large and specialised farms are more likely to be transferred within the family and to have appointed a successor. The number of family members, as well as the experience of farm operator, is also significantly related to the succession behaviour. The probabilities of succession, and of having a successor, first increase with age and then decline again. Furthermore, timing of succession is delayed as the farm holder ages, suggesting most farm operator's’ succession plans to be...

Labor Market Participation of Chinese Agricultural Households AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Herzfeld, Thomas; Wang, Xiaobing.
This work is devoted to the analysis of the different labor market participation regimes of Chinese farm households. Using household data over the period 1986-2000 from the province Zhejiang, we apply a multinomial logit model to empirically examine household, farm, and regional characteristics affecting the probability that farmers employ one of four alternative labor market regimes. Results suggest that labor market decisions are significantly related to several personal, farm, and village attitudes. In addition, we find the more market oriented policy reforms at the end of the 1980s stipulated that households participate in labor markets while the more anti-market reforms during the 1990s led to the opposite and encouraged autarky.

The Dynamics of Chinese Rural Households' Participation in Labor Markets AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Herzfeld, Thomas; Wang, Xiaobing.
The work focuses on the frequency of each possible transition between labor market participation regimes of rural Chinese households. A continuous hazard approach is applied to empirically evaluate factors, as household, farm, and regional characteristics affecting the frequency of transition between labor market participation states. Results suggest that there are frequent changes of labor market participations regimes among the househo lds. Given the change in external conditions and other factor end owments this might indicate that households quickly response in allocating labor in order to equilibrate the resources. Further, we find that there are good chances climbing out of autarky; however the probability to fall in autarky was also remarkable over...

FARM HOUSEHOLD DECISIONS UNDER VARIOUS TAX POLICIES: COMPARATIVE STATIC RESULTS AND EVIDENCE FROM HOUSEHOLD DATA AgEcon
Henningsen, Arne; Glauben, Thomas; Henning, Christian H.C.A..
The study is devoted to the comparative static analysis and econometric estimation of farm household decisions under both standard and agricultural taxes. Accounting for labor market constraints a non-separable model is constructed implying increasing per-unit costs of accessing labor markets. To control for tax-induced adjustments related to labor market imperfections we compare the results to those derived from a separable approach, assuming perfect labor markets. Theoretical results suggest that most tax-induced responses are ambivalent mainly caused by shadow prices effects. Further, tax-induced effects differ between the two model versions. In particular standard taxes may imply production adjustments in the case of non-separability. Thus, income and...

Estimating the Degree of Buyers' Market Power: Evidence from the Ukrainian Meat Processing Industry AgEcon
Perekhozhuk, Oleksandr; Matyukha, Andriy; Glauben, Thomas.
This study develops a structural market model for the econometric analysis of buyers’ market power in the Ukrainian meat processing industry, because there is some evidence that suggests that meat processors may excise market power in the agricultural market of slaughtered livestock. The estimation results did not produce any evidence suggesting the existence of buyers’ market power. Contrary to many other NEIO-studies, we extended the market structure market model by the three subsequent models. Using endogenously determined values for market power parameter, we found that meat processors concerning the buyers’ market for slaughtered livestock behave consistently with Cournot conjectures.

DOES MONEY ILLUSION MATTER? THE IMPACT OF EURO ON THE VERTICAL TRANSMISSION OF FOOD PRICE IN GERMANY AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Loy, Jens-Peter; Meyer, Jochen.
In this paper the impact of the introduction of the Euro on the vertical price transmission in German food markets is analyzed. It is hypothesized that the presence of money illusion might have lead to higher real prices as a result of the Euro, and if so it must be accompanied with a higher margin between the respective wholesale and retail price. While generally studies focus on the behavior of average prices, in this study the reactions of individual retailers are investigated. For lettuce and chicken the vertical price relationships between retail and wholesale prices are estimated by an error correction approach, which is extended to test for structural breaks with a flexible time frame. The results indicate no impact of the Euro for most of the...

POLICY REFORM AND PRODUCTIVITY CHANGE IN CHINESE AGRICULTURE: A DISTANCE FUNCTION APPROACH AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Lu, Wencong C.; Brümmer, Bernhard.
Agricultural policy reform has been an important source of change in the Chinese agricultural sector. The reforms led to productivity growth and helped China in pursuing its self- sufficiency goal especially in the grain sector. To analyse whether observable productivity growth stems from technologically induced components, or from the market induced parts, a multi-input-multi-output model is derived using an econometric distance function framework. A decomposition allows to distinguish allocative effects, scale effects, technological change, and technical efficiency change. Data on farms in Zhejiang from 1986 to 1999 are used to analyse the impact of policy reform.

Marktmacht ausgewählter Branchen der deutschen Ernährungswirtschaft auf internationalen Märkten AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Loy, Jens-Peter.
In this paper we applied two well known empirical models, the ‘pricing-to-market’ and the ‘residual demand elasticity’ approach, to test for market power of German food and beverage exporters on the main international markets (beer, cocoa powder, chocolate, and sugar confectionary). We compared the estimation results and considered the time series properties of the model variables, which both had an impact on the conclusions drawn from the model estimates. On many international food markets conditions for the existence of market power are fulfilled, such as concentrated supply and/or demand structures, or specific product qualities. For the products under study we have shown that the supply side is highly concentrated. For instance, for beer, cocoa powder,...

INFLUENCES OF THE GOVERNMENTAL MARKET INTERVENTIONS ON WHEAT MARKETS IN SERBIA DURING THE FOOD CRISIS 2007/2008 AgEcon
Djuric, Ivan; Goetz, Linde; Glauben, Thomas.
This paper analyzes how the market interventions of the Serbian government during the food crisis 2007/2008, inter alia a de facto export ban, have affected domestic wheat markets. Besides a comprehensive description of the crisis policy and its effects on the Serbian wheat market, we investigate how it influences the equilibrium and stability of the Serbian wheat market and its integration with the world market within a price transmission model. Applying a Markov-switching error correction model to weekly wheat grower prices in Serbia and world market prices, two states of the wheat market are identified. Our results suggest that although the long-run price elasticity did not change during the crisis, the market equilibrium was disrupted and the market...

Impacts of Export Controls On Wheat Markets During the Food Crisis 2007/2008 in Russia and Ukraine AgEcon
Goetz, Linde; Glauben, Thomas; Brümmer, Bernhard.
This paper investigates the impacts of export controls in Russia and Ukraine on wheat world market price transmission during the 2007/2008 global food crisis. Russia and Ukraine aimed to reduce wheat exports induced by extraordinarily high world market prices to secure sufficient wheat supply on the domestic markets. Utilizing a Markov-Switching vector error correction model (MSVECM), we find that the temporary export restrictions induced negative effects on wheat markets in Russia and Ukraine. Although instability increased on the world markets itself, we have shown that the increase in the market instability was particularly pronounced in Russia and Ukraine. Also, the export restrictions dampened price transmission to the farmers’ prices, which pushed...

Water Saving Technology in Chinese Rice Production - Evidence from Survey Data AgEcon
Abdulai, Awudu; Glauben, Thomas; Herzfeld, Thomas; Zhou, Shudong.
Whereas water is an important input in rice production, China faces severe problems with increasing demand for water and limited water resources. In conventional paddy production, one of the most important irrigated crops, a significant amount of irrigation water is lost due to percolation and evaporation. Therefore, it exist a vivid research in water saving rice technologies. This paper analyzes the adoption of one of these water-saving rice production technologies, the so-called Ground Cover Rice Production System (GCRPS), in the Hubei province. Based on farm survey data several factors which affect the adoption decision could be identified. The adoption decision is treated as a binary choice problem and therefore a probit model is used for the...

THE INFLUENCES OF EXPORT CONTROLS ON WHEAT MARKETS IN SERBIA DURING THE FOOD CRISIS 2007-2008 AgEcon
Djuric, Ivan; Glauben, Thomas; Goetz, Linde.
During the food crisis in 2007/2008 the government of Serbia restricted the export of wheat to ensure that wheat supply on the domestic market is sufficient thereby dampening the increase in consumer food prices. This study investigates the effects of the export restriction on the integration, equilibrium and stability of its domestic wheat market. Within the framework of a Markov-switching error correction model, we utilize weekly wheat grower prices of Serbia and world market prices and compare the state of the wheat market prevailing in the time period before the crisis to when the exports controls are effective. Our results suggest that although the degree of market integration and thus the long-run price elasticity do not change during the crisis, the...
