Aerial photographs and in situ data of the Glenan archipelago permit the establishment of a cartography of its Zostera marina seagrass beds. Due to the exceptionally clear water, it was possible to distinguish submerged structures, such as rocks, sand dunes, maerl beds and seagrass meadows on the photographs. The distribution of Zostera meadows was incorporated into a geographical information database through scanning, and then compared with historical data. Ten aerial photographic surveys, made over a sixty-year period from 1932 to 1992 were available. The earliest of these surveys showed the seagrass beds to be in goad condition. Low cover in 1952 suggests that the Zostera meadows within the studied area were subject to severe destructions, presumably... |

Do post-larval recruitment and year-class segregation constitute a response to abiotic and biotic factors? Avoiding the traditional controversy about conditions in rocky and soft bottom conditions, the authors describe several examples where year-class segregations are evident in soft bottoms, taken from different trophic guilds of echinoderm populations on the coast of Brittany: suspension feeders, herbivorous and carnivorous populations. Physical factors such as fronts or gyres can concentrate larvae and nutritive particles for suspension-feeder populations. These factors are, on the other hand, conducive to the establishment and persistence of stable populations in time. The cohorts being long-lived, the oldest classes are very abundant and, as a... |

Oxygen depletion occurs today in many marine coastal ecosystems of industrialized countries. This phenomenon has been observed in the Bay of Vilaine, a sheltered and shallow ecosystem of Southern Brittany subjected to eutrophication. The soft bottom macrofauna of this site has been studied in order to highlight the influence of the oxygen under-saturation of bottom waters on the faunal and structural characteristics of benthic communities. Concurrently, the sediment has been analysed. A clustering classification analysis permitted the identification of six macrozoobenthic community units distributed from offshore to the estuary: Haploops tubicola muds; Sternaspis scutata - Nucula turgida muds; Ampelisca spinimana sandy muds; Lanice conchilega muddy... |

The temporal evolution of the Amphiura filiformis community of two stations in the Bay of Concarneau was followed during a period of ten years (1970-1979). A concomitance has been found between the demographic fluctuations of the community and the effects of climatic and hydrodynamic factors occurring in the bay throughout the observation period. At the end of the decade a decline of the Amphiura filiformis population and some qualitative changes in the community are observed. |

Merja Zerga lagoon, located on the Moroccan Atlantic coast, is a site of international value (Ramsar Site) in terms of its ornithological diversity. However, the lagoon is heavily exploited for its clams and fishes. In an effort to further understanding of lagoon ecosystems, and thus to facilitate the management and conservation of their resources, an ecological survey of its benthic component was carried out. Benthos is a valuable food source for birds, fishes and humans. This work involved identifying the macrozoobenthic communities in the lagoon and assessing their spatial distribution. The study was based on monthly sampling of the intertidal zone and seasonal sampling in subtidal zone, over a one-year period. In the intertidal zone, salinity and... |
