Gammarus fossarum A redescription of Koch, 1835, is given, together with some notes on the variability in morphological characters of this species, both within one population and in different populations. It is proved through crosses that five morphologically different populations all belong to the same species, G. fossarum. The geographic variation of the various characters is discussed. |

The results of the investigations on environmental factors, standing crop and migration patterns of Gammarus pulex pulex (Linnaeus, 1758), G. fossarum Koch in Panzer, 1836, and Echinogammarus berilloni (Catta, 1878) in the river Slack (Pas-de-Calais, France) are linked to get a picture of gammarid life in a small chalk stream. Gammarids appear to live in clusters, here called microgeographic races, with more or less unpopulated areas between them. By non-accidental migration they are able to colonize new areas. The locomotory activity necessary to feed and reproduce causes (and is reflected in) accidental migration. The different ways in which the three species respond to environmental factors can be explained by their different origin. G. p. pulex and G.... |

This paper is the first of a series of four, it describes the general outline of a research project on the ecology of Gammarus pulex pulex (Linnaeus, 1758), G. fossarum Koch in Panzer, 1836, and Echinogammarus berilloni (Catta, 1878) in a small French chalk stream, the Slack. The entire study investigates the impact of (changes in) environmental factors on standing crop and migration of these three freshwater gammarids. An account is given of biological and physicochemical research methods used. Special methods to capture both drifting and upstream migrating gammarids were developed. In this first part, data on environmental factors are presented with an emphasis on the seasonal and microgeographic variation they show in this river. Detailed information... |

A historical review is given of the literature oil Italian members of the genus Gammarus. Only three Gammarus species were known with certainty from Italy, viz G. fossarum Koch, 1836, G. lacustris G.O. Sars, 1863, and G. cf. balcanicus Schäferna, 1922. G. fossarum is widely distributed in the northern part of Italy. Near the Yugoslavian border a member of the G. balcanicus-group sometimes coexists with this species. G. lacustris seems to be confined to mountain lakes. Some doubt remains about the identity of G. fontinalis A. Costa, 1883. During the present study a new species was found, G. italicus, inhabiting a restricted area in the central part of Italy and the northwestern part of Sardinia. |

Migration of Gammarus pulex pulex (Linnaeus, 1758), G. fossarum Koch in Panzer, 1836, and Echinogammarus berilloni (Catta, 1878) has been studied in a small French chalk stream, the Slack. Three different approaches to investigate both up- and downstream migration were used: (1) migration survey, with a sampling program of migration at intervals of two weeks or a month at twelve localities in the river Slack; (2) continuous measurement of migration at three habitats with very stable, normal and very unstable environmental conditions, respectively, lying within 100 m of one another and populated by the same species, G. fossarum; (3) finally, marking experiments in order to identify and trace animals with a given behaviour. Both drift and upstream migration... |
