Intensive dairy farming systems from Holland and Brazil: SWOT analyse comparison Animal Sciences
Passetti, Rodrigo Augusto Cortêz; Eiras, Carlos Emanuel; Gomes, Ludmila Couto; Santos, Junio Fabiano dos; Prado, Ivanor Nunes do.
Intensive systems of milk production in Brazil and Holland are compared by SWOT analysis. Twenty-one farms, 10 in Wageningen, central region of Holland, and 11 in Castro, central-eastern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, were sampled. Data were retrieved from semi-structured interviews with the owners or people responsible for dairy activities, using a questionnaire guide and a digital recorder. After results were analysed, a table was elaborated representing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks for each country. Dairy farms in Holland were uniform, or rather, small and medium-sized farms with high production. It has also been observed that Dutch farms have several problems due to high intensification, for example, hoof diseases with...

Effect of cassava wastewater on physicochemical characteristics and fatty acids composition of meat from feedlot-finished lambs Animal Sciences
Santana Neto, Jose Adelson; Muniz, Evandro Neves; Santos, Gladston Rafael Arruda; Macedo, Francisco de Assis Fonseca; Rangel, Jose Henrique de Albuquerque; Gomes, Ludmila Couto.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of includingcassava wastewater (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 L animal-1 day-1) in diets of feedlot-finished lambs on the physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid composition of their meat. Thirty-two uncastrated lambs atan average age of 167 days and an average body weight of 24.76 ± 3.00 kg were distributed into four groups in a completely randomized design with eight animals per group for each treatment. Inclusion of cassava wastewater linearly reduced cooking losses, shear force, and yellow intensity and linearly increased the fat content of the meat. The amounts of myristic, stearic, linoleic, and total fatty acids were changed. Additionally, an effect of cassava wastewater was observed on the amounts of...

Influence of calcium salts of long chain fatty acids on the intake and digestibility of rations in female kids under heat stress Animal Sciences
Ferrari, Isabella Ribeiro; Alcalde, Claudete Regina; Gomes, Ludmila Couto; Molina, Bruna Susan de Labio; Barbosa, Orlando Rus; Santos, Sérgio Mangano de Almeida.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the addition of calcium salts of long chain fatty acids (CSFA) on the intake and digestibility of diets. Twenty-five female goat kids housed in digestibility cages and subjected to heat stress of 32°C in a climatic chamber, were used. The female kids were distributed in a randomized block design with five treatments: control (without inclusion of CSFA) and 6.25; 12.50; 18.75 and 25.00 g CSFA kg-1 of DM. The inclusion of CSFA in rations did not influence water intake (3.08 L day-1), dry matter (0.66 kg day-1), organic matter (0.62 kg day-1), crude protein (0.12 kg day-1), neutral detergent fiber (0.27 kg day-1) and total carbohydrate (0.47 kg day-1). The results of the digestibility of dry matter (0.66 kg kg-1),...

The impact of dietary dry yeast on lactation curves of primiparous and multiparous Saanen goats Animal Sciences
Gomes, Ludmila Couto; Alcalde, Claudete Regina; Souza, Rodrigo de; Molina, Bruna Susan de Lábio; Lourenço, Daniela Andressa de Lino; Martins, Elias Nunes.
Twenty-four Saanen goats (fifteen multiparous and nine primiparous) during their lactation period were used, from the kidding until the 200th day of lactation; and were distributed in a completely randomized design and in a factorial arrangement (3 diets x 2 parity orders). The diets were composed of either soybean meal (SBM), soybean meal plus inactive dry yeast (SMDY) or inactive dry yeast (DY) used as the protein source. The analyses of milk yield, body weight and dry matter intake (DMI) were made through the Bayesian methodology. For construct the lactation curves were used the Wood’s nonlinear model. The inclusion of inactive dry yeast in the diets reduced the rate of yield increase until the lactation peak for primiparous goats, but for multiparous...
