Estudos sôbre a alimentação mineral do cafeeiro, X: extração de macronutrientes na colheita pelas variedades "Mundo Novo", "Caturra" e "Bourbon Amarelo" 43
Arzolla,S.; Gomes,L.; Sarruge,J. R.; Andrade,R. G.; Graner,E. A.; Malavolta,E..
This paper deals with the determination of the content of macronutrients in pulp and beans of three coffee varieties, namely 'Mundo Novo', 'Caturra Amarelo' and 'Bourbon Amarelo'. Samples were collected in plantations located in the three types of soils herein most of S. Paulo, Brazil, coffee is grown, that is, "terra roxa legítima" (Ribeirão Preto), "massapé-salmourão" (Mocóca), and "arenito de Bauru" (Pindorama). The following main conclusions were drawn after statistical analysis of data obtained hereby. There is no statistical difference among the three varieties . Average contents of macronutrients, as per cent of the dry matter, are the following: N P K Ca Mg S bean 1,71 0,10 1,53 0,27 0,15 0,12 pulps 1.78 0,14 3,75 0,41 0,13 0,15 Samples collected...

Estudo sobre a Alimentação Mineral do algodoeiro I: marcha da absorpção do macronutrientes (Nota prévia) 43
Sarruge,J. R.; Gomes,L.; Haag,H. P.; Malavolta,E..
Cotton (variety I. A. C. 11) was grown on a sandy soil under two treatments, namely: (1) NPK + lime and (2) no fertilizers. Three weeks after planting a systematic sampling of entire plants was done every other week. In the laboratory determinations of dry weight were made and afterwards the various plant partes were submitted to chemical analyses, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) being determined. The aim of this work was to obtain information on the periods in which the absorption of the several macronutrients was more intense, this providing a clue for time of application of certain mineral fertilizers. Data obtained hereby allowed for the following main conclusions. The initial rate of growth of...

Estudos sobre a alimentação mineral do cafeeiro: XIX. extração de micronutrientes na colheita pelas variedades "Mundo novo", "Caturra Amarelo" e "Bourbon Amarelo" 43
Sarruge,J. R.; Andrade,R. G.; Gomes,L.; Arzolla,S.; Graner,E. A.; Malavolta,E..

Distribution of small proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans in humerus-related articular cartilage of chickens 56
Rodrigues,E.D.; Pimentel,E.R.; Mourão,P.A.S.; Gomes,L..
The expression of components present in the cartilaginous extracellular matrix is related to development, gender, and genotype, as well as to the biomechanical properties of each type of cartilage. In the present study, we analyzed small proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans present in different cartilages of the chicken wing after extraction with guanidine hydrochloride or papain. Quantitative analysis of glycosaminoglycans showed a larger amount in humeral cartilage (around 200 mg/g tissue) than in articular cartilage of the radius and ulna, with 138 and 80 mg/g tissue, respectively. Non-collagenous proteins isolated were predominantly from cartilage in the proximal regions of the humerus and radius. D4 fractions obtained by ultracentrifugation were...

Ethnicity and glutathione S-transferase (GSTM1/GSTT1) polymorphisms in a Brazilian population 56
Gattás,G.J.F.; Kato,M.; Soares-Vieira,J.A.; Siraque,M.S.; Kohler,P.; Gomes,L.; Rego,M.A.V.; Bydlowski,S.P..
The distribution of polymorphisms related to glutathione S-transferases (GST) has been described in different populations, mainly for white individuals. We evaluated the distribution of GST mu (GSTM1) and theta (GSTT1) genotypes in 594 individuals, by multiplex PCR-based methods, using amplification of the exon 7 of CYP1A1 gene as an internal control. In São Paulo, 233 whites, 87 mulattos, and 137 blacks, all healthy blood-donor volunteers, were tested. In Bahia, where black and mulatto populations are more numerous, 137 subjects were evaluated. The frequency of the GSTM1 null genotype was significantly higher among whites (55.4%) than among mulattos (41.4%; P = 0.03) and blacks (32.8%; P < 0.0001) from São Paulo, or Bahian subjects in general (35.7%; P...

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (CD26) activity in the hematopoietic system: differences between the membrane-anchored and the released enzyme activity 56
Pereira,D.A.; Gomes,L.; El-Cheikh,M.C.; Borojevic,R..
Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV; CD26) (EC 3.4.14.5) is a membrane-anchored ectoenzyme with N-terminal exopeptidase activity that preferentially cleaves X-Pro-dipeptides. It can also be spontaneously released to act in the extracellular environment or associated with the extracellular matrix. Many hematopoietic cytokines and chemokines contain DPP-IV-susceptible N-terminal sequences. We monitored DPP-IV expression and activity in murine bone marrow and liver stroma cells which sustain hematopoiesis, myeloid precursors, skin fibroblasts, and myoblasts. RT-PCR analysis showed that all these cells produced mRNA for DPP-IV. Partially purified protein reacted with a commercial antibody to CD26. The K M values for Gly-Pro-p-nitroanilide ranged from 0.43 to 0.98...
