AFLP analysis of genetic diversity in determinate and indeterminate snap bean accessions Agronomy
Andrade, Felipe Aranha de; Gonçalves, Leandro Simões Azeredo; Miglioranza, Édison; Ruas, Claudete de Fátima; Ruas, Paulo Mauricio; Takahashi, Lúcia Sadayo Assari.
The present study aimed to estimate and characterize the genetic divergence between determinate and indeterminate snap bean accessions from the Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL) germplasm bank based on amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. A total of 40 and 32 accessions with determinate and indeterminate growth habits, respectively, were characterized for this purpose. Seven combinations of primers corresponding to EcoR1 and Mse1 were tested for the AFLP analysis, and the combinations E-AAG/M-CTC, E-ACT/M-CTT and E-ACC/M-CTT were selected. The resulting products were denatured and subjected to capillary electrophoresis. The Jaccard distance was used to estimate the genetic distances between accessions, and the Unweighted Pair...

Combining ability for common bacterial blight resistance in snap and dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Agronomy
Trindade, Roberto dos Santos; Rodrigues, Rosana; Amaral Junior, Antonio Teixeira do; Gonçalves, Leandro Simões Azeredo; Viana, José Marcelo Soriano; Sudré, Claudia Pombo.
Common bacterial blight (CBB), which is caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap), is the main bacterial disease in snap beans and controlling this disease using resistant cultivars is still a challenge. This work aimed to study the combining ability for CBB resistance in Phaseolus vulgaris genotypes. Six parents (two genotypes of CBB-resistant dry bean and four susceptible snap bean accessions) were crossed in a complete diallel scheme without reciprocals to estimate the general and specific ability to Xap resistance. CBB resistance was evaluated by the inoculation with two Xap isolates, and its severity was evaluated based on the four following resistance components: area under the disease progress curve; scores in the leaves; latent period and...

Adaptability and stability assessment of bean cultivars of the carioca commercial group by a Bayesian approach Agronomy
Euzebio, Milena Pierotti; Fonseca, Inês Cristina de Batista; Fonseca Júnior, Nelson da Silva; Nascimento, Moysés; Giordani, Willian; Gonçalves, Leandro Simões Azeredo.
To develop new bean commercial cultivars, a series of experiments called Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) assays are necessary. Bayesian analysis using information on prior VCU trials is an alternative to obtain greater precision during genotype selection. The objective of the present work was to select, under a Bayesian perspective, genotypes of the carioca bean from the state of Paraná that combine high adaptability and phenotypic stability, using information from previous VCU assays. This study used data from six experiments conducted in a randomized block design, in which the grain yield of 18 genotypes was assayed. To represent weakly informative prior distributions, the study used probability distributions with high variance; to represent...

Genetic diversity among Brazilian okra landraces detected by morphoagronomic and molecular descriptors Agronomy
Massucato, Luana Rainieri; Nakamura, Karina Kazue; Ruas, Paulo Mauricio; Zefa, Douglas Mariani; Silva, Derly José Henrique da; Gonçalves, Leandro Simões Azeredo.
The conservation of okra landraces [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] in gene banks is essential for the success of their use in breeding programmes. This study evaluated the genetic diversity among okra landraces in Brazil based on morphoagronomic descriptors and AFLP markers. We studied 30 accessions of the vegetable gene bank of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. To this end, 17 morphoagronomic descriptors and five combinations of AFLP primers were used. Genetic parameters were estimated for the quantitative traits and the accessions were grouped by Ward’s method, using the Gower’s and Jaccard’s distance measures, respectively, for the morphoagronomic and molecular data. Polymorphisms were observed for all qualitative traits, while the quantitative...

History of northern corn leaf blight disease in the seventh cycle of recurrent selection of an UENF-14 popcorn population Agronomy
Ribeiro, Rodrigo Moreira; Amaral Júnior, Antônio Teixeira; Pena, Guilherme Ferreira; Vivas, Marcelo; Kurosawa, Railan Nascimento; Gonçalves, Leandro Simões Azeredo.
To investigate the genetic resistance to northern corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum) disease in the UENF-14 popcorn population and the inclusion of this trait in the analysis, two hundred ten popcorn half-sib families were evaluated using an incomplete block design with treatments arranged in replicates "Sets". Regarding the Families within "Set" (F/S) source of variation, enough genetic variability was found for northern corn leaf blight disease resistance to be explored in the next cycles of the UENF popcorn breeding program. The open-pollinated UENF-14 variety has a source of resistance to this disease in its genetic basis, given that it originated from crossing with an American cultivar with yellow grains that is resistant to disease. These...
