A Preliminary Investigation of the Effects of Human Physical Disturbance on the Ecology of the Soldier Crab Dotilla fenestrata (Crustacea, Ocypodidae) at Praia da Costa do Sol, Maputo OceanDocs
Gonçalves, P.M.B.; Pereira, M.A.M..
The effects of human trampling on the population parameters of the soldier crab Dotilla fenestrata at Praia da Costa do Sol, Maputo were studied in two areas subjected to two different levels of human disturbance: (1) a low disturbance area; and (2) a high disturbance area. Sampling was carried out 1 day before and 1 day after disturbance took place and crab abundance and biomass data were compared between the two periods at each area. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found between abundance and biomass values before and after the disturbance. These results suggest that human trampling has an insignificant effect on D. fenestrata and that behavioral and habitat structure aspects might play more important roles on the population ecology of the...

First Assessment of the Effects of the 2000 Southern Mozambique Floods on Coral Communities: The Case of Xai-Xai Lagoon OceanDocs
Gonçalves, P.M.B.; Pereira, M.A.M..
The southern part of Mozambique suffered, at the beginning of the present year, the worst floods in the last 50 years, which caused several fatalities and high material losses. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of this phenomenon on the coral communities of the Xai-Xai lagoon reef. Benthic category percentage cover was assessed in January 2000 (before the floods) and September 2000 (after the floods) using the line intercept transect (LIT). A decrease of hard coral percentage cover was observed, in the order of 58.5 %. The soft coral community was also affected, with a high decrease of percentage cover, about 90.4%. Other benthic category that showed an elevated decrease was coralline algae (85.1%). All other categories increased...

Influence of Human Exploitation of Intertidal Mollusk Resources on the Selection and Utilisation of Gastropod Shells by the Hermit Crab Clibanarius longitarsus (de Haan) in Costa do Sol Mangrove, Maputo OceanDocs
Gonçalves, P.M.B.; Pereira, M.A.M..
The use of gastropod shells by the hermit crab Clibanarius longitarsus at Costa do Sol Mangrove was investigated. Particular attention was paid to the influence of human collection of intertidal gastropod resources on the availability and utilization of shells by C. longitarsus. Three main methods were used in this study: crab field collections, shell selection laboratory experiments and interviews with local women who collect intertidal mollusk resources. A total of 23 shell types were used by C. longitarsus at the Costa do Sol mangrove, the most common being Volema pyrum, Murex brevispina and Terebralia palustris. Gastropod shells were a limiting resource for hermit crabs. Although shell availability could not be explained by human exploitation, which...

Uma Investigação ao Comércio de Peixe Ornamental em Moçambique OceanDocs
Whittington, M.; Pereira, M.A.M.; Gonçalves, P.M.B.; Costa, A..

Coral Reef Monitoring in Mozambique: The Program and 1999 Results OceanDocs
Gonçalves, P.M.B.; Pereira, M.A.M.; Motta, H.; Rodrigues, M.J..
Mozambique initiated a Coral Reef Management Programme (MCRMP) in 1998, with the core aim to ensure the long-term sustainable utilization of the coral reef resources of Mozambique. Within the programmed activities, the monitoring of coral reefs is one of the most important. Thus, a long-term monitoring programme was launched in 1999 with most of the monitoring stations being visited in November 1999. Several reefs along the coast were surveyed, using standardized methodology. The preliminary results of this study showed already that protected or inaccessible reefs were in better conditions than those freely exploited, and highlighted the need for management measures and establishment of marine protected areas. The present paper reviews the preliminary...
