Influence of wearing time on efficacy of disposable surgical masks as microbial barrier BJM
Barbosa,Maria Helena; Graziano,Kazuko Uchikawa.
The present study evaluated the efficacy of disposable surgical masks as a microbial barrier with 95% of Bacteria Filtration Efficacy (BFE) according to the wearing time (1, 2, 4 and 6 hours). The masks showed a decrease in efficacy after a 4-hour wearing time.

Evaluation of the sterilization efficacy of domestic electric drills used in orthopaedic surgeries BJM
Goveia,Vania Regina; Pinto,Flavia Morais Gomes; Machoshvili,Irene Alexeevna; Penna,Thereza Christina Vessoni; Graziano,Kazuko Uchikawa.
It is estimated that electric drills (ED) have been used in orthopaedic surgeries for bone drilling for more than 50 years in Brazilian hospitals. It is an electric, thermosensitive equipment, not indicated for surgical use, which has not been previously evaluated regarding the sterilization efficacy, being suspect of infection risk. This study evaluated the efficacy of sterilization by ethylene oxide (EtO) of new drills that were intentionally contaminated with Bacillus atrophaeus spores. An experimental, laboratory, randomized applied research was developed, where 16 electric drills were analyzed, in addition to positive and negative controls. All the previously cleaned and sterilized equipment were submitted to contamination by spores. The experimental...

Evaluation of the use and re-use of cotton fabrics as medical and hospital wraps BJM
Rodrigues,Edna; Levin,Anna S.; Sinto,Sumiko Ikura; Mendes,Caio Figueiredo; Barbosa,Benedito; Graziano,Kazuko Uchikawa.
The objective of this study was to verify the efficacy of cotton fabric, made of serge bonding 2 x 1, as microbial barrier, when new and after multiple laundering and steam sterilization procedures. The power of the microbial barrier was correlated with physical characteristics of the fabric, using standard test methods for evaluation of weight, traction, stretching tearing resistance and microbiological characteristics. The microbiological results evidenced that the microbial barrier was effective when the wrapping material was new or went through a maximum of new 65 reprocessing procedures. As for the alterations in the physical characteristics of the reprocessed material, the decrease in weight seemed to be the event responsible for microbial barrier...
