How fast can the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) larvae cross the Atlantic Ocean? ArchiMer
Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Blanke, Bruno; Treguier, Anne-marie; Grima, Nicolas; Rivot, Etienne; Vermard, Youen; Greiner, Eric; Le Pape, Olivier.
The migration duration of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) larvae (leptocephali) from the spawning areas in the Sargasso Sea to the European continental shelf remains highly controversial, with estimates varying from 6 months to more than 2 yr. We estimated the fastest migration period and the shortest distance travelled by eel larvae by simulating Lagrangian particles released in the Sargasso Sea and by simulating a range of larval behaviours (fixed-depth drift, vertical diurnal migration and active-depth selection to maximize current velocity). This enabled us to compute (i) a passive drift speed, and (ii) a hypothetic swimming speed needed for European eel larvae to cross the Atlantic in 6 months (i.e., the migration duration estimated from otolith...

Evaluation of an operational ocean model configuration at 1/12° spatial resolution for the Indonesian seas – Part 1: Ocean physics ArchiMer
Tranchant, Benoit; Reffray, Guillaume; Greiner, Eric; Nugroho, Dwiyoga; Koch-larrouy, Ariane; Gaspar, Philippe.
INDO12, a 1/12° regional version of the NEMO physical ocean model covering the whole Indonesian EEZ has been developed and is now running every week in the framework of the INDESO project (Infrastructure Development of Space Oceanography) implemented by the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The initial hydrographic conditions as well as open boundary conditions are derived from the operational global ocean forecasting system at 1/4° operated by Mercator Ocean. Atmospheric forcing fields (3 hourly ECMWF analyses) are used to force the regional model. INDO12 is also forced by tidal currents and elevations, and by the inverse barometer effect. The turbulent mixing induced by internal tides is taken into account through a specific...

A large-scale view of oceanic variability from 2007 to 2015 in the global high resolution monitoring and forecasting system at Mercator Océan ArchiMer

The global high resolution monitoring and forecasting system PSY4 at Mercator Océan, initialized in October 2006, has achieved 11 years of global ocean state estimation. Based on the NEMO global 1/12° configuration, PSY4 includes data assimilation of satellite and multi-instrument in situ observations. In parallel to this monitoring system, a twin-free simulation (with no assimilation) has been performed for the period 2007-2015. In this study, monthly-averaged fields of both ocean state estimates are compared with observation products for the period 2007-2015, to examine the consistency of PSY4 fields with related observations for representing large-scale variability and to provide a baseline that is mainly focused on in situ comparisons for...

The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) Ocean State Report (OSR) provides an annual report of the state of the global ocean and European regional seas for policy and decision-makers with the additional aim of increasing general public awareness about the status of, and changes in, the marine environment. The CMEMS OSR draws on expert analysis and provides a 3-D view (through reanalysis systems), a view from above (through remote-sensing data) and a direct view of the interior (through in situ measurements) of the global ocean and the European regional seas. The report is based on the unique CMEMS monitoring capabilities of the blue (hydrography, currents), white (sea ice) and green (e.g. Chlorophyll) marine environment. This first...

Recent updates to the Copernicus Marine Service global ocean monitoring and forecasting real-time 1∕12° high-resolution system ArchiMer
Lellouche, Jean-michel; Greiner, Eric; Le Galloudec, Olivier; Garric, Gilles; Regnier, Charly; Drevillon, Marie; Benkiran, Mounir; Testut, Charles-emmanuel; Bourdalle-badie, Romain; Gasparin, Florent; Hernandez, Olga; Levier, Bruno; Drilled, Yann; Remy, Elisabeth; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
Since 19 October 2016, and in the framework of Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), Mercator Ocean has delivered real-time daily services (weekly analyses and daily 10-day forecasts) with a new global 1∕12° high-resolution (eddy-resolving) monitoring and forecasting system. The model component is the NEMO platform driven at the surface by the IFS ECMWF atmospheric analyses and forecasts. Observations are assimilated by means of a reduced-order Kalman filter with a three-dimensional multivariate modal decomposition of the background error. Along-track altimeter data, satellite sea surface temperature, sea ice concentration, and in situ temperature and salinity vertical profiles are jointly assimilated to estimate the initial conditions...

Impact of multiple altimeter data and mean dynamic topography in a global analysis and forecasting system ArchiMer
Hamon, Mathieu; Greiner, Eric; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Remy, Elisabeth.
Satellite altimetry is one of the main sources of information used to constrain global ocean analysis and forecasting systems. In addition to in situ vertical temperature and salinity profiles, and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data, Sea Level Anomalies (SLA) from multiple altimeters are assimilated through the knowledge of a surface reference, the Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT). The quality of analyses and forecasts mainly depends on the availability of SLA observations and on the accuracy of the MDT. A series of Observing System Evaluations (OSEs) were conducted to assess the relative importance of the number of assimilated altimeters and the accuracy of the MDT in a Mercator Ocean global ¼° ocean data assimilation system. Dedicated tools were used to...

Evaluation of real time and future global monitoring and forecasting systems at Mercator Ocean ArchiMer
Lellouche, Jean-michel; Le Gallouedec, O.; Drevillon, Marie; Regnier, C.; Greiner, Eric; Garric, Gilles; Ferry, N.; Desportes, C.; Testut, Charles-emmanuel; Bricaud, C.; Bourdalle-badie, R.; Tranchant, B.; Benkiran, Mounir; Drillet, Y.; Daudin, A.; De Nicola, C..
Since December 2010, the global analysis and forecast of the MyOcean system consists in the Mercator Océan NEMO global 1/4° configuration with a 1/12° "zoom" over the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The zoom open boundaries come from the global 1/4° at 20° S and 80° N. The data assimilation uses a reduced order Kalman filter with a 3-D multivariate modal decomposition of the forecast error. It includes an adaptative error and a localization algorithm. A 3D-Var scheme corrects for the slowly evolving large-scale biases in temperature and salinity. Altimeter data, satellite temperature and in situ temperature and salinity vertical profiles are jointly assimilated to estimate the initial conditions for the numerical ocean forecasting. This paper gives a...
