| In 2008 werd in het Kuinderbos (Flevoland) de varenhybride Polystichum ×bicknellii (Christ) Hahne gevonden. Het betreft de eerste vondst in Nederland. Het exemplaar stond in een populatie Polystichum aculeatum (L.) Roth op een greppelkant op kalkhoudend Blokzijlzand en in de sterke schaduw van Fagus sylvatica L. en Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carrière. Polystichum aculeatum is een van de ouders; de andere oudersoort, P. setiferum (Forssk.) T.Moore ex Woyn., groeide op 90 m afstand van de hybride. Moleculaire analyse en cytometrie bevestigen de hybride status van de plant.
