Synergy between cadmium and zinc in bean plants cultivated in multi contaminated soils Agronomy
Almeida, Lorena Gabriela; Silva, Dayane Meireles da; Jorge, Adelcio de Paula; Souza, Kamila Rezende Dázio de; Guilherme, Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Alves, José Donizeti.
Agricultural species are subjected to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses, which are the main limitations to crop production. In this context, contamination by trace elements is characterized as an abiotic stress that represents an environmental problem. Due to the physical and chemical similarities between cadmium and zinc, these elements may interact in the environment and may cause antagonistic or synergistic effects. In this way, physiological mechanisms to exclude, detoxify or compartmentalize trace elements that are in excess are crucial for plant survival when exposed to high concentrations of these elements. In this way, the aim of this study was to understand the physiological responses of Phaseolus vulgaris plants subjected to increasing...

Influence of sulfur on selenium absorption in strawberry Agronomy
Santiago, Franklin Eduardo Melo; Silva, Maria Ligia de Sousa; Ribeiro, Flaviane de Oliveirra; Cipriano, Patriciani Estela; Guilherme, Luiz Roberto Guimarães.
Selenium (Se) is an essential mineral element for animals and humans, and attention has been devoted to Se biofortification of agricultural crops. Due to the scarcity of studies aimed at guiding the nutritional Se-enrichment on strawberry and the need to understand the interaction between Se and sulfur (S) in this cultivation, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the application of Se and S levels on the nutrition and production of strawberry. Treatments consisted of five levels of Se (0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and 2.4 mg dm-3 as sodium selenate) and two levels of S (0 and 60 mg dm-3 as gypsum), which were applied in dystroferric Red Latosol soils under greenhouse conditions. The concentration and accumulation of Se are drastically reduced in...

Lanthanum content and effects on growth, gas exchanges, and chlorophyll index in maize plants Biological Sciences
Duarte, Ana Carolina Oliveira; Oliveira, Cynthia de; Ramos, Sílvio Júnio; Castro, Evaristo Mauro de; Siqueira, José Oswaldo; Guilherme, Luiz Roberto Guimarães.
Rare earth elements, such as lanthanum (La), have been applied to agriculture via fertilizers, aiming to increase the productivity and crop quality, such results observed mainly in China. However, the knowledge about the effect of La on maize growth, as well as for other species, despite the growing interest it is still limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of La on maize growth, La content, photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content in maize plants in response to La treatment (0, 25, 50, 100, 150, 300 and 600 μM) in nutrient solution for three weeks. The plants were placed in geminated pots using a split-root technique. One of the pots in the geminated set was filled with a complete nutrient solution without La, while another was...
