Buried fluvial incisions as a record of Middle-Late Miocene eustasy fall on the Armorican Shelf (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Paquet, Fabien; Menier, David; Estournes, Guilhem; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Leroy, Pascal; Guillocheau, Francois.
High-resolution seismic data have been acquired in June 2008 on the Armorican Shelf (AS), in the northern Bay of Biscay, in order to reassess its stratigraphic architecture in detail and to study the impact of eustasy, tectonic and sediment delivery on the margin sedimentary record. Several profiles show fluvial-type incisions of several tens of meters (up to 54 m) associated to a widespread erosion surface. Several hypotheses are proposed for the stratigraphic position of this surface and incisions. We suggest Middle to Late Miocene age. Considering the relatively quiescent tectonic activity of the margin, we infer that the relative sea-level fall responsible of aerial incision on the Miocene shelf is eustasy-related. We propose the attested...

Quantifying subsidence and isostatic readjustment using sedimentary paleomarkers, example from the Gulf of Lion ArchiMer

Passive margins are characterised by an important tectonic and thermal subsidence, which favours a good preservation of sedimentary sequences. This sedimentation in turn enhances the subsidence because of loading effects. We present here a direct method based on sedimentary markers seen on seismic data, to evaluate total subsidence rates from the coast to the outer shelf and to the deep basin in the Gulf of Lion, from the beginning of massive salt deposition up to present day (the last circa 6 Ma) with minimal theoretical assumptions. On the shelf, the Pliocene-Quaternary subsidence shows a seaward tilt reaching a rate of 240 m/Ma (±15 m/Ma) at the shelf break (70 km from the present day coastline) (i.e. a total angle of rotation of 0.88° (0.16°/Ma)). We...

L'énigmatique Fosse Centrale de la Manche : une approche de sa morphologie et de son remplissage par géophysique haute résolution ArchiMer
Lericolais, Gilles; Auffret, J.p.; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Berne, Serge; Guennoc, Pol; Le Drezen, Eliane; Normand, Alain; Guillocheau, Francois.
New high resolution geophysical results from EM1000 swath-bathymetry system and Very High Resolution reflection seismic data are presented. A Neogene tectonical origin of the Hurd Deep and the interplay of erosion, sedimentation during the last glacial, inter-glacial periods are here argued by interpretation of these results in term of geomorphology and sequence stratigraphy.

Les canyons du Var et du Paillon (marge des Alpes méridionales-Méditerranée occidentale) : une origine quaternaire par glissement. ArchiMer
Guillocheau, Francois; Pautot, Guy; Auzende, Jean-marie.
A morphological analysis of the Baie desAnges (Nice) Seabeam map has been carried out in order to investigate the genesis of the Var and Paillon submarine canyons. From the identification of the morphological units at différent scales one is able to proposea model for the formation of the canyons, The Var and Paillon canyons are interpreted as being cut in a deep-sea fan presently being destroyed by mass wasting processes. .The structural framework exhibits an orthogonal fault system which plays a prominent role in the spatial distribution of the canyons and the sliding areas. The age of these canyons is thought to be Quatenary.
