Awareness to Environmental Pollution in Turkey AgEcon
Cankurt, Murat; Miran, Bulent; Gunden, Cihat; Sahin, Ahmet.
The main purposes of the study were to clarify the conceptual reference of environmental awareness and to investigate the relationship between some individual, socio-economic factors and awareness to environmental issues. In addition, the factors that affect the environmental awareness were also determined. Face to face interviews were done with 975 individuals 25 cities were chosen throughout Turkey, which means at least 2 cities from each region. The models were estimated by the ordered logistic regression. Environmental awareness were evaluated from the standpoints of water, air and soil. Among the pollution categories, people were mostly aware of the pollution in air. In policies related to converting sensitivity to environment to action the Turkish...

An Analysis of Consumer Preferences for Information Sources on Food Safety by using Fuzzy Pair-wise Comparison AgEcon
Gunden, Cihat; Miran, Bulent; Uysal, Ozlem Karahan; Kenanog, Zerrin.
The main objective of this study is to measure consumer preferences for information sources on food safety along with the factors influencing the degree of consumer preferences in Turkey. The data were obtained from a survey of 385 consumers selected randomly in Izmir, Turkey. This study involves two-stage methodology. In the first stage, fuzzy pair-wise comparison was applied to calculate a measure of preferences. Five information sources on food safety, television programmes, doctors/experts, newspapers/journal articles, radio programmes and neighbors/friends were given to the consumers. The consumers were asked to make pair-wise comparisons among the information sources. The information source hierarchies of consumers were established and ranked from...

Measurements of Agricultural Productivity and Efficiency Gains from NAFTA AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Gunden, Cihat; Shaik, Saleem; Allen, Albert J.; Li, Tongzhe.
The primary objective of this study is to empirically determine whether North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has contributed to increased agricultural productivity in any of its member countries. Implementation of the NAFTA began on January 1, 1994. This agreement removed most barriers to trade and investment among the United States, Canada, and Mexico, in which all non-tariff barriers to agricultural trade between these countries were eliminated. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index were used to estimate the total factor productivity change, technical change, and efficiency change of agricultural production for each NAFTA country. Then, using time series data, the efficiency changes in countries were compared to...

A Market Share Analysis of Virgin Olive Oil Producer Countries with special respect to Competitiveness AgEcon
Turkekul, Berna; Gunden, Cihat; Abay, Canan; Miran, Bulent.
In this study, Constant Market Share Analysis is used in order to determine the competitiveness of Turkey and its competitors, which are the main olive oil producers, in the USA, Australia, Canada, Brazil and Japan's markets between 1990/94 and 200/04 periods. The analysis shows that during the period covered Italy is the most competitive in the destination markets. Greece and Turkey follow Italy. In the same period although Spain's export towards destination markets is increased, its competitiveness is affected adversely due to decrease in its market share. Turkey's success in sustainable and permanent international competitiveness in olive oil depends on production, organization and trade policy.

Efficiency Measure in Nitrogen Management under U.S. Trade Induced Corn Production AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Gunden, Cihat; Allen, Albert J.; Akuffo, Akua S..
The overall objective of this paper is to measure the impact of the undesirable outputs from NAFTA (agricultural production and trade) on the environment by years in post-NAFTA period. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to measure environmental efficiency by considering desirable (corn production) and undesirable (nitrogen) outputs in fifteen states. DEA allowed us to measure the level of nitrogen pollution to be reduced by modeling undesirable output in efficiency evaluation. Data from 15 states (Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin) on corn production, land use and nitrogen fertilizer from 1994-2008 (post-NAFTA) were considered. The...
