Exposure of pampas fox (Pseudalopex gymnocercus) and crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) from the Southern region of Brazil to Canine distemper virus (CDV), Canine parvovirus (CPV) and Canine coronavirus (CCoV) BABT
Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira; Pappen,Felipe Geraldes; Ruas,Jerônimo Lopes; Vargas,Gilberto D'Ávila; Fischer,Geferson; Vidor,Telmo.
The exposure of 13 Brazilian free-ranging nondomestic canids (five pampas fox - Pseudalopex gymnocercus and eight crab-eating fox -Cerdocyon thous) from Southern region of Brazil, to Canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV) and Canine coronavirus (CCoV) was investigated. Antibodies against CDV were detected in 38.5% (5/13) of the samples. There were anti-CDV antibodies in 60% (3/5) of P. gymnocercus and in 25% (2/8) of C. thous. The frequency was higher among the adults and males. Eleven canids (84.6%) presented antibodies against CPV, 80% (4/5) were from P. gymnocercus and 87.5% (7/8) were from C. thous. There was no difference in positivity rate against CPV between gender and age. Antibodies against CCoV were detected in 38.5% (5/13) of the...

Investigation on Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) and Avian Poxvirus (APV) in magellanic penguins in Southern region of Brazil BABT
Nunes,Cristina Freitas; Fonseca,Fabiane; Leite,Alice Teixeira Meirelles; Silva Filho,Rodolfo Pinho da; Finger,Paula Fonseca; Castro,Clarissa Caetano; Fischer,Geferson; Vargas,Gilberto D'avila; Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira.
To investigate the exposure of the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and avian poxvirus (APV) in Magellanic penguins found on the beaches in Southern regions of Brazil, the frequency of serum antibodies was estimated in 89 samples taken during 2005 and 2006. All the penguins were negative for the presence of antibodies against NDV by hemagglutination inhibition test and to APV by indirect ELISA. The reactivity was similar to the positives controls using ELISA kit for the IBDV made in the chickens in 50 samples. This reactivity also was demonstrated in 42 samples using agar gel immunodiffusion. No clinical signs related to IBDV infection were observed. The results indicated the absence of infection by NDV and APV but...

Antiviral activity of a Bacillus sp: P34 peptide against pathogenic viruses of domestic animals BJM
Silva,Débora Scopel e; Castro,Clarissa Caetano de; Silva,Fábio da Silva e; Sant'anna,Voltaire; Vargas,Gilberto D'Avila; Lima,Marcelo de; Fischer,Geferson; Brandelli,Adriano; Motta,Amanda de Souza da; Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira.
P34 is an antimicrobial peptide produced by a Bacillus sp. strain isolated from the intestinal contents of a fish in the Brazilian Amazon basin with reported antibacterial activity. The aim of this work was to evaluate the peptide P34 for its in vitro antiviral properties against canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), canine coronavirus (CCoV), canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2), equine arteritis virus (EAV), equine influenza virus (EIV), feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1). The results showed that the peptide P34 exhibited antiviral activity against EAV and FHV-1. The peptide P34 inhibited the replication of EAV by 99.9% and FHV-1 by 94.4%. Virucidal activity was detected only against EAV. When P34 and EAV...

Activity of the antimicrobial peptide P34 against bovine alphaherpesvirus type 1 Ciência Rural
Castro,Clarissa Caetano de; Silva,Débora Scopel e; Costa,Géssica Aracéli; Fischer,Geferson; Vargas,Gilberto D’Avila; Brandelli,Adriano; Lima,Marcelo de; Motta,Amanda de Souza da; Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Previous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of the peptide P34. In this study, the antiviral potential of P34 and the in vitro mechanism of action were investigated against bovine alphaherpesvirus type 1 (BoHV1). P34 exhibited low toxicity, a high selectivity index (22.9) and a percentage of inhibition of up to 100% in MDBK cells. Results from antiviral assays indicated that P34 did not interact with cell receptors, but it was able to inhibit the viral penetration immediately after pre-adsorption. In addition, BoHV1 growth curve in MDBK cells in the presence of P34 revealed a significant reduction in virus titer only 8h post-infection, also suggesting an important role at late stages of the replicative cycle. Virucidal effect...

Avian IgY antibodies: characteristics and applications in immunodiagnostic Ciência Rural
Munhoz,Lívia Silveira; Vargas,Gilberto D'Ávila; Fischer,Geferson; Lima,Marcelo de; Esteves,Paulo Augusto; Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira.
Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) is the major antibody isotype in birds, reptiles, amphibia, and lungfish, playing a similar biological role as mammal IgG. Due to its phylogenetic distance, immune diversification and presence in the egg yolk, IgY provide a number of advantages in immunodiagnostic compared to IgG from mammals. Moreover, IgY production is in agreement with international efforts to reduce, refine and if possible, to replace animals in experimentation, contributing substantially in favor of animal welfare. This article presents an overview about structural and functional features, production and applications of IgY in immunodiagnostic, as well as the advantages of chicken antibodies use.

Viruses that affect Apis mellifera and their occurrence in Brazil Ciência Rural
Chagas,Domitila Brzoskowski; Monteiro,Francielle Liz; Hübner,Silvia de Oliveira; Lima,Marcelo de; Fischer,Geferson.
ABSTRACT: Bees are very important insects for agriculture, fulfilling an important role in pollination and renewal of the ecosystem. However, in several countries significant losses of colonies and population decline of honeybees and native bees have been reported in recent years. Most researchers reported that premature losses are linked to several factors, including viruses that have a great impact on the colonies. This article reports the identification of new viruses, some transmission routes, the association of these parasites with the symptoms of the diseases that affect the health of honeybees, as well as viruses that have been described in Brazil.
