Various records of A. simplex Carter, 1879 from the Atlantic are assigned to three new species of the sponge genus Asteropus Sollas, 1888, viz.: A. brasiliensis sp. n., A. vasiformis sp. n., and A. niger sp. n., whereas A. simplex s.s. is restricted to the Indo- Pacific. A worldwide study of Asteropus specimens resulted in the conclusion that two species groups exist, namely “simplex”- like species (with true sanidasters), and “sarasinorum”-like species (with spiny microrhabds), as previously observed by Bergquist (1965, 1968). A newly discovered microsclere complement of trichodragmata in the first group strengthens the need for generic distinction of both lineages, and accordingly the name Melophlus Thiele, 1899 is reinstated for the “sarasinorum”... |

Two new species of Mycale with micracanthoxeas are described: Mycale (Aegogropila) lilianae n. sp., mainly characterized by the presence of toxas as large as 300 µm, and Mycale (Carmia) urizae n. sp., the first Mycale with micracanthoxeas described from Africa, characterized by the presence of anisochelae-III with the falx projecting downwards from the middle basal portion of the frontal alae of the head, and by the presence of two morphologically distinct size classes of toxas, with toxas-II being notably oxea-shaped. A discussion of all species of Mycale with micracanthoxeas is included. It is postulated that a comprehensive assessment of the distribution of this character, as well as of other micromorphological features of Mycale spicules, may shed... |

Mycale escarlatei n.sp. is described from the coasts of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and from the Santa Marta area in Colombia. It belongs to the subgenus Aegogropila and is distinguished from other congeners in the area, by slender anisochelae-II and possession of micracanthoxeas. Mycale unguifera n.sp. is found in the Islas del Rosario and Santa Marta area in Colombia. It belongs to the subgenus Grapelia and is distinguished within this taxon, by its large and abundant sigmas. The specimen described by Carter (1886) as Pseudoesperia enigmatica, is here proposed as neotype of Grapelia australis. Furthermore, we provide a phylogenetic discussion of centrally-thickened, centrotylote-like toxas, micracanthoxeas, absence of an ectosomal skeleton and... |
