Cereal crop species and varieties differ in competitive ability against weeds mainly as influenced by differences in canopy architecture. The FASSET crop model was used to separate the effects of a number of crop traits on the suppressive ability of winter wheat varieties and the ability to tolerate weeds. The model simulated the competition between different varieties of winter wheat and a sown grass mixture for light, water and nitrogen. Crop physiological parameters of eight varieties and one variety mixture were estimated from measurements in a 3-year field experiment. The parameters estimated were thermal time from emergence to flag leaf appearance, thermal time from flag leaf appearance to anthesis, thermal time from anthesis to yellow ripeness,... |

At the time for weed control, either chemical or physical, the potential yield of the crop (and thus the potential size of the yield loss due to weeds) is very uncertain, as only a minor part of the growing season has passed and the time for the major yield formation is after the weed control. The aim of this study was to investigate four scenarios of using sensor-based reflectance, vegetation cover- and canopy structure measurements in the early growth stages to estimate the potential yield of four pure spring barley varieties and four variety mixtures of spring barley grown in competition with weeds under two different nutrient levels in two years. |

Field studies on perennial weeds, such as Cirsium arvense, are necessary to study the systemic effects of weed control. In this study we analyse the responses in above-ground C. arvense biomass and crop yield from results obtained in two organic field experiments, both combining stubble cultivation with post-harvest catch crops. A range of catch crops was investigated, varying in both species mixture and method of establishment, yet stubble cultivation was the only treatment found to reduce C. arvense density. The effect was even seen only in one year when a harsh winter acted synergistically with soil tillage. C. arvense exhibited density-dependent growth, in terms of above-ground biomass at harvest, with an estimated max. exponential growth rate of... |

Perennial weeds can be a major constraint to organic crop production in several North European 26 countries. Preventive and cultural control measures may not suffice when infestations with perennials 27 become severe. Direct control actions applied between crops can then be necessary to reduce the 28 problems. We conducted two experiments, one on a sandy loam and one on a sandy soil, respectively, in 29 Denmark, with the aim of studying the efficacy of different implement types and strategies. The 30 treatments were employed against mixed stands of perennials after harvest of spring barley in two 31 consecutive years. Time of treatment, cultivation depth and combinations of implements constituted the 32 strategies. Treatment effects were evaluated in the... |

During one intensive week in October 2005, the authors were gathered to discuss the impact that globalisation has on the Organic Food Systems and the opportunities that globalisation opens up for developing these systems. The meeting took place as a Ph.D. course under the auspices of the Research School of Organic Farming and Food Systems (SOAR; www.soar.dk). All participants research within Organic Agriculture and Food Production in one way or another. |
