Sensitivity of soil phosphorus tests in predicting the potential risk of phosphorus loss from pasture soil Organic Eprints
Soinne, Helena; Saarijärvi, Kirsi; Karppinen, Minna; Hartikainen, Helinä.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of urine and dung additions on the phosphorus (P) chemistry of pasture land and to compare the sensitivity of two soil extraction methods in assessing the P-loading risk. In a field experiment, urine and dung were added to soil in amounts corresponding to single excrement portions and the soil samples, taken at certain intervals, were analysed for pHH2O, acid ammonium acetate extractable P (PAc) and water extractable total P (TPw), and molybdate reactive P (MRPw). Urine additions immediately increased soil pH and MRPw, but no such response was observed in PAc extraction due to the low pH (4.65) of the extractant enhancing the resorption of P. The PAc responded to the dunginduced increase in soil total...

Biofortification of food chain with selenium Organic Eprints
Seppänen, Mervi; Kontturi, Juha; Hartikainen, Helinä.
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals which is circulated to food chain via crop plants. Agronomic biofortification with Se is used in areas where the soil Se content is low and Se deficiency causes health problems. Brassica species are efficient in accumulation of soil Se and therefore an attractive choice of species for biofortification. Se uptake and translocation was studied in B. rapa and B. napus in field experiments applied with 0, 6 or 20 mg Se ha-1 as Na2SeO4 and foliar sprays of 30 mg Se ha-1 as Na2SeO4 or Na2SeO3. In addition, a HPLC-ICP-MS based method to identify and quantify organic Se-compounds in seeds and meals was developed. High concentration of Se accumulated in seeds (1.89 μg g-1) and after oil...

Allocation of added selenium in lettuce and its impact on roots Organic Eprints
Simojoki, Asko; Xue, Tailin; Lukkari, Kaarina; Pennanen, Arja; Hartikainen, Helinä.
Allocation of selenium (Se) in lettuce and its impact on root morphology were studied to better understand the growth responses of plants to added Se. Lettuce was grown in vermiculite under controlled growing conditions for seven weeks, and the allocation in the shoots and roots of selenate added in increasing dosages (0, 1, 10, 100, 500 and 1000 µg Se per 3.5-litre pot) as well as morphological variables of the roots were determined. The intermediate additions of 100 and 500 µg Se per pot seemed to produce the highest biomasses, although this was nearly masked by large scatter in the data. The Se contents both in roots and shoots increased roughly proportionally to the amount of Se added. However, at small additions Se was preferentially allocated to...
