Production of biomass and bioenergy in organic agriculture and its consequences for soil quality, environment, biodiversity and socio-economy Organic Eprints
Johansen, A.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Ambus, P.; Dalgaard, T.; Jørgensen, U.; Nielsen, A.M.; Nielsen, L.H.; Olesen, J.E.; Roepstorff, A.; Skytte, K.; Smith, J.E.; Thomsen, A.B.; Carter, M.S.; Jensen, E.S..
Production of bioenergy in organic agriculture may be implemented in the future to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore it is important to assess the potential effect this may have on soil quality and biological parameters. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil bio-geo-chemical cycling of plant nutrients and biodiversity of the soil microbiota.

Grain legumes and nitrate leaching: significance and prevention Organic Eprints
Jensen, E.S.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Aveline, A.; Crozat, Y..
The amount of internationally published evidence on the effects of grain legumes on nitrate leaching is sparse and some studies may have weak points. Nevertheless, this mini-review indicates that the level of N leaching is 0–20 kg N ha-1 greater after pea than after cereals. Methods to prevent N leaching should be further developed and there is a need to genetically improve the root systems of grain legumes.

Modelling dry matter production and resource use in intercrops of pea and barley Organic Eprints
Berntsen, J.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Olesen, J.E.; Petersen, B.M.; Jensen, E.S.; Thomsen, A..
The FASSET whole farm model was extended with a sub-model for competition between several plant species for light, water and nitrogen. The new model was tested on intercrops of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). A three-year dataset on pea and barley sole crop growth was used for calibration. Two datasets that included detailed measurements of crop production, nitrogen uptake and leaf area indices from two sites were used for testing. An arable organic experiment from three sites including several treatments over four years was also used for testing. The model predicted the increase in resource utilisation of pea and barley and effects on pea symbiotic nitrogen fixation satisfactorily. The effects of pea interspecific...
