Magen-Darm Parasiten – Unterscheiden sich Schweizer Schafrassen bezüglich ihrer Anfälligkeit? Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix.

Dairy goats, naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, were fed 700g sainfoin- or alfalfa-pellets per day, additionally to a non-tanniferous basic diet. The effect of the feeding on the parasite egg excretion per gramm faeces (EPG) was monitored over a period of 7 weeks. The trial was conducted in parallel at two sites; in France and in Switzerland. At both sites the same quality of sainfoin- and alfalfapellets were used. Compared to the alfalfa group the EPG of the sainfoin fed goats were reduced by 12% in France andby 18% in Switzerland. A repeated measurement analysis revealed no significant difference between the feeding groups at neither site. As it is very likely that the effect of condensed tannins on gastrointestinal nematodes is dose...

Übersicht zur alternativen Wurmkontrolle bei kleinen Wiederkäuern Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Amsler, Zivile; Krenmayr, Ilse; Perler, Erika; Maurer, Veronika.
Gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) are the most important problem in small ruminant production with regard to animal welfare and economics. The control of GIN currently relies almost exclusively on the use of synthetic anthelmintics. This is unsatisfactory for organic as well as for conventional small ruminant farmers because of rapid increase of resistant GIN populations and risk of residues in meat and milk. Alternatives to synthetic anthelmintics are therefore needed. This poster presents the main alternative control strategies for GIN. The strategies are divided into measures aimed at freeliving GIN stages (grazing management, biological control) and at stages within the host (genetic resistance, vaccination, anthelmintic plants, feeding...

Sainfoin - new data on anthelmintic effects and production in sheep and goats Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Werne, Steffen; Maurer, Veronika; Perler, Erika; Amsler, Zivile; Probst, Johanna; Zaugg, Cornelia; Krenmeyr, Ilse.
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are one of the most important problems affecting health and therefore performance and welfare in small ruminant husbandry. The control of these parasites in the past strongly relied on the repeated use of anthelmintic drugs. This has led to nematode populations which are resistant to most of the currently available anthelmintics. Furthermore customer’s demands for organic and residue free animal products are increasing. The aforementioned problems have given a strong impetus for the development of new non-chemical strategies to control GIN. Previous research has pointed out the anthelmintic potential of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia, cv. Visnovsky) and other tanniferous (CT) feed sources in goats and lambs infected with...

Individual administration of three tanniferous forage plants to lambs artificially infected with Haemonchus contortus and Cooperia curticei Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Häring, Dieter-Adrian; Maurer, Veronika; Senn, Markus; Hertzberg, Hubertus.
We investigated direct anthelmintic effects associated with the feeding of fresh tanniferous forages against established populations of Haemonchus contortus and Cooperia curticei in lambs. Twenty-four parasite naive lambs were inoculated with a single dose of infective larvae of these two parasites 27 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment. Lambs were individually fed with either chicory (Cichorium intybus), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) or a ryegrass/ lucerne mixture (control) for 17 days. Animals where then united to one flock and subjected to control feeding for another 11 days to test the sustainability of potentially lowered egg excretion generated by tanniferous forage feeding. When compared to...

Control of gastrointestinal nematodes in organic beef cattle through grazing management Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Figi, Rolf; Noto, Fabio; Heckendorn, Felix.
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a major health and economic risk factor in ruminant production in organic and conventional farms (Thamsborg et al., 1999). Fattening of organic beef cattle (OBC) on pasture is an emerging area for organic farmers in Switzerland, which partly compensates the declining development in dairy production. So far, there are no data available about the parasitic status of beef cattle kept in organic farms between weaning (4-6 month) and slaughter (24-26 month). The aim of the present study was to assess the parasitological status of organic beef cattle in the pre-alpine and alpine region of Switzerland and to analyse the benefits of different grazing strategies for GIN control.

Lammfleischqualität von extensiv gehaltenen und seltenen Schweizer Schafrassen (Engadinerschaf, Schwarznasenschaf, Spiegelschaf) im Vergleich zum Weißen Alpenschaf Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna; Leiber, Florian; Heckendorn, Felix.
This study investigates meat quality of four autochthonous Swiss ovine breeds, White Alpine (WAS, n=15), Walliser blacknose sheep (SN, n=8), Engadine sheep (EN, n=9) and the Mirror sheep (SP, n=10). Especially for the latter two breeds, which are rare and endangered, information about meat quality and constitution is important for merchandising issues. All lambs (LW 20-25 kg) of each breed were fattened on pasture for 208 d and subsequently slaughtered. Evaluations were carried out for slaughter yield and classifications, pH-value, colorimetry (L*a*b*-System), shear force (Warner Bratzler method) and cooking losses in the Musculus longissimus dorsi. The results showed no meat quality defects in any breed. The main differences between breeds arose...

Organic Eprints
Maurer, Veronika; Amsler, Zivile; Perler, Erika; Heckendorn, Felix.
The aim of our experiments was to investigate the transmission and infectivity of the two main helminth parasites of poultry (Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum) under different run and litter management regimes. In experiment (a) two stocking rates were simulated in outdoor runs and the effect of a simple management practice (mowing) on helminth transmission was studied during two subsequent flocks. Stocking rate seemed not to change helminth transmission patterns and repeated mowing of runs did not reduce helminth infections. Lower stocking rates led to a substantial improvement of the run vegetation. In experiment (b) two litter management regimes (replace or add litter material) were compared to unmanaged litter with regard to...

Development of prevention and treatment strategies for parasites in poultry Organic Eprints
Maurer, Veronika; Amsler, Zivile; Heckendorn, Felix; Perler, Erika.
Parasitic infections are likely to be more important in organic and other free-range hens than in birds kept indoors. Several workpackages of QLIF aim at improving prevention and therapy of helminth (Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum) and arthropod (Dermanyssus gallinae) parasites of laying hens. This paper is a summary of the work undertaken in the first 3 years of QLIF.

Wurm-Befall bei Jungrindern unter trockenen Weidebedingungen Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Maurer, Veronika; Heckendorn, Felix; Wanner, Anne; Gutzwiller, Andreas; Mosimann, Eric.

Effects of paddock management on vegetation, nutrient accumulation, and intrnal parasites in laying hens Organic Eprints
Maurer, Veronika; Hertzberg, Hubertus; Heckendorn, Felix; Hördegen, Philipp; Koller, Martin.
Management of paddocks for free-range layers requires an effort from farmers to minimize the adverse effects of these systems on animal health (e.g., parasites)and environment (e.g., nutrient accumulation and leaching). In this study, we report results from 2 on-farm experiments conducted to investigate (1) the effects of rotational versus continuous use of the paddocks and(2) the effects of wood chips in the area close to the pop holes (openings to the paddock) with regard to turf quality, nutrient load in the soil, and parasite infections. Rotational use of the hen paddocks led to a lower proportion of bare soil close to the house, but not in more distant regions. Covering the area in front of the house with wood chips did not reduce bare areas. Nitrogen...

Weidemanagement beugt Parasitenbefall vor Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Bapst, Beat; Heckendorn, Felix; Figi, Rolf.

Alternatives to Synthetic Chemical Antiparasitic Drugs in Organic Livestock Farming in Europe Organic Eprints
Hoste, Hervé; Sotiraki, Smaragda; Mejer, Helena; Heckendorn, Felix; Maurer, Veronika; Thamsborg, Stig.
Gastrointestinal parasitism with helminths and protozoa remains a major threat in cattle and small ruminant production and has been “rediscovered” in pig and poultry production systems operating under organic farming rules because of the requirement to grant outdoor access to the animals. The control of these parasitic infections is a key issue for the economic viability of farms and for animal welfare. Control solutions aim at (i) providing the agronomical bases for parasite control through rational management of pastures; (ii) stimulating the host immune response through different means; (iii) exploring and evaluating the efficacy of new drugs (i.e., phytotherapy, homeopathy and nutraceuticals); and (iv) developing new concepts of application of chemical...
