Changes to the Dutch list of weevils: Simo hirticornis to be deleted and S. variegatus to be added (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Some years ago Palm (1995) discovered that the weevil ‘Simo hirticornis’ was a mixture of two species: S. hirticornis en S. variegatus. Dutch material from institutional collections as well as from some private collections was examined and it turned out that all Dutch specimens belong to S. variegatus. Therefore S. hirticornis must be deleted from the Dutch beetle list and replaced by S. variegatus. Information is presented on the occurrence of S. variegatus in the Netherlands. Diagnostic characters of both species are discussed. |

• Premise of the Study: Although many species in the orchid genus Coelogyne are horticulturally popular, hardly anything is known about their pollination. Pollinators of three species were observed in the fi eld in Nepal. This information is urgently needed because many orchid species in Nepal are endangered. Whether the exudates produced by extrafl oral nectaries played a role in protection against herbivory was also investigated. • Methods: Pollinators of C. fl accida , C. nitida , and Otochilus albus were filmed, captured, and identifi ed. Ant surveys and exclusion experiments were carried out. To investigate whether pollinators are needed for fruit set, plants were wrapped in mesh wire bags. Infl orescence stems were examined with microscopy. Fehling... |

The occurrence of Ceratapion gibbirostre and C. carduorum in the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Apionidae) We re-examined the Dutch material of Ceratapion carduorum, present in the main Dutch museum collections and some private collections. It was found that in the past C. carduorum was confused with C. gibbirostre. Ceratapion gibbirostre is a common and widespread species, occurring in all provinces in the Netherlands. The true Ceratapion carduorum appeared to be very rare: only five specimens from three localities in the north of the country, proved to be that species. |

On the occurrence of Otiorhynchus dieckmanni in the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) In 1994 Otiorhynchus dieckmanni was collected for the first time in the Netherlands in a garden in Helvoirt (Noord-Brabant). Since then the species was recorded from several other localities far apart from each other, in the provinces of Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Flevoland and Noord-Holland. On one locality at Weert (Limburg), the species was collected in two consecutive years; on another locality, Heemstede (Noord-Holland), one teneral specimen was found. These data strongly suggest that O. dieckmanni is now well established in the Netherlands. |

Otiorhynchus apenninus, a new weevil for the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Otiorhynchus apenninus (= O. salicicola) is reported for the first time from the Netherlands. The species was collected in a garden at Hoofddorp (Noord-Holland), Rijswijk (Zuid-Holland) and in and around a garden at Heemstede (Noord-Holland). The species appeared to be present at the locality at Heemstede for several successive years, despite an attempt to eradicate it. We therefore conclude that O. apenninus must be considered as established in the Netherlands. Some data are presented on the European distribution and host plants of the species. Illustrations of the male and female genitalia are provided. |

The springtail Lepidocyrtus paradoxus new to the Dutch fauna (Hexapoda: Collembola) Lepidocyrtus paradoxus Uzel, 1890 is a central European springtail, which is recorded here as new to the Dutch fauna. The species was collected in high numbers on a site called the Sint Pietersberg (near Maastricht), a hill at the southern point of the province of Limburg. The location can be described as a meadow on calcareous soil with a short vegetation. Morphological characters that discriminate this species from other Lepidocyrtus-species in the Netherlands are illustrated. A description of the site, supported by photographs, is made and information on its occurrence in Europe is summarised. A list with accompanying species of Collembola caught on the same site is... |
