Entwicklung der Erregerbefunde und Zellzahlen aus Viertelanfangsgemelken in Herden des pro-Q Projekts Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Heil, Fritz; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Notz, Christophe; Maeschli, Ariane; Staehli, Pamela.
The objective of this study was to assess effects on intramammary infections and somatic cell score (SCS) upon reduction antibiotic udder treatments. The study was part of an udder health programme (pro-Q) implementing preventive measures and complementary treatment methods. The treatment proportion decreased from annually 39 to 20 per 100 cows. A total of 10'000 of quarter milk samples out of 4 yearly investigations of 33 Swiss dairy herds were analysed .There was no general change in somatic cell score (SCS) considering all taken samples. A significant increase of Staphylococcus ssp. findings (12%) could be observed beside a decrease of the SCS in samples of this pathogens group. Using GLM statistical analysis, significant effects by lactation...

Mastitis in dairy cows is a multi-causal disease. Animal husbandry is one of the important factors influencing herd udder health. In our study, skin lesion scores and cleanness scores are used as animal-based indicators for husbandry problems. We investigated the impact of husbandry on the prevalence of skin lesions and the correlation between skin lesions, cleanness and udder health in 67 herds joining the Swiss udder health project “pro-Q”. 62.8% of all examined cows had at least one skin lesion. 13% of all cows were seriously dirty. Housing factors, such as dimension and design of the lying area influenced the prevalence of skin lesions significantly. Hard surface, rubber mats, narrow dimensions of lying place, horns, as well as stanchion barns...

Body Condition Scoring (BCS) zur Kontrolle von Fütterungsfehlern bei Milchkühen im Biolandbau im Hinblick auf Risiken für die Eutergesundheit Organic Eprints
Klocke, Peter; Dollinger, Julia; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Heil, Fritz.
Body Condition Scoring (BCS) is a simple method to control the energy supply of single dairy cows as well as for the entire herd. This is very important especially for organic herds due to limited resources of energy intake. Within an udder health pro-gramme regular BCS using a 5 point scale with 0.25 pt. steps is a good tool to detect feeding problems. The impact of fattened cows during dry time and meagre cows during lactation peak on metabolic health and fertility is known, but not the correlation between BCS and udder health. Within the extension programme “pro-Q” 530 dairy cows were scored at minimum twice during one lactation. The first time was 10 days before to 5 days after calving (BCS-1), the second time was in lactation up to day 100 (once or...

pro-Q-Projekt in der Schweiz. Bestandsbetreuung von Milchviehbetrieben Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Heil, Fritz.

Organic conform udder health concepts. How to reduce therapies Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Notz, Christophe; Klocke, Peter; Spranger, Jörg; Heil, Fritz.
Both consumers and governments expect quality products from healthy organic livestock. In consequence, keeping farm animals healthy has the highest priority in veterinary work on organic farms. Different Swiss FiBL projects in mastitis of the last years were aimed in health concepts conform to organic livestock principles. One project includes 20 Farms (with an average of 15 cows per farm) of a Swiss high mountain region. It puts emphasis on milking hygiene, milking technology, mastitis treatment during lactation (homeopathy versus antibiosis) and dry-off treatment (homeopathy versus placebo and partially additional antibiotic). The overall result was a reduction of cows with a somatic cell count higher than 150’000/ml based on milk recording dates...

Handling the dry-off problem in organic dairy herds by teat sealing or homeopathy com-pared to therapy omission Organic Eprints
Klocke, Peter; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Walkenhorst, Michael; Maeschli, Ariane; Heil, Fritz.
Avoiding antibiotics is one of the crucial goals in organic dairy herd health management. Thus, a trial with 102 cows (408 quarters) was conducted to com-pare 2 common medical dry-off practices in organic dairying, internal teat sealant (Orbeseal®, Pfizer) and herd specific homeopathic remedies, with an untreated control. Regarding the sub-clinical mastitis protection rate (IPR), the results show no significant benefit for the two treatment groups in general. The homeopathic group had an advantage in the treatment of cows at drying off showing less than 200k cells/ml. The protection OR of these cows was 5.80 (95%-CI 1.36-29.87) compared to control. Teat sealants showed the best results in protection against environmental infections. Only 13% (n=10/80) of...

Eutergesundheit im Milchviehbetrieb - ein Managementleitfaden Organic Eprints
Heil, Fritz; Klocke, Peter; Notz, Christophe; Spranger, Jörg; Stöger, Elisabeth; Walkenhorst, Michael; Striezel, Andreas.

Management factors affecting udder health and effects of a one year extension program in organic dairy herds Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Walkenhorst, Michael; Heil, Fritz; Notz, Christophe; Maeschli, Ariane; Butler, Gillian; Klocke, Peter.
The first part of this study was a cross-sectional analysis of the impact of 29 management factors on udder health in organic dairy farms in Switzerland. All 77 farms joined the extension program ‘pro-Q’. As a measure of udder health the theoretical bulk milk somatic cell count (TBMSCC)calculated by the monthly cow composite somatic cell count over a time period of 1 year was chosen. The basic udder health of the farms was determined by TBMSCC during the year prior to the start of the project (mean for all farms 176,460 cells/ml). In the multivariable analysis, the five factors ‘swiss brown breed’, ‘alpine summer pasturing’, ‘calf feeding with milk from mastitis diseased cows’, ‘hard bedding’ and ‘no post-milking’ remained as significant risk factors on...

Focussing on health promotion on organic farming in practice – the example of the Swiss pro-q project Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Heil, Fritz; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Mäschli, Ariane; Notz, Christoph.
In organic livestock production a high status of animal health should be reached and maintained mainly with preventive measures. The Swiss pro-q project provides and example of how to change the focus from treating diseases to keeping animals healthy on organic farms. Data of the mastitis status and the use of antibiotics of about 100 Swiss organic dairy herds have been collected since 2003. Quarter milk samples and milk recording data are used as criteria to determine the mastitis status. During a period of at least 2 years the project farms will be intensively advised by the project team in relation to observed mastitis causing factors in housing, feeding, human-animal-interaction, milking technology and milking hygiene. Therapies are primarily based on...

Pro-Q: Strategien zur Verbesserung der Eutergesundheit und Minimierung des Antibiotikaeinsatzes in schweizerischen Biomilchviehbetrieben Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Heil, Fritz; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Notz, Christophe; Spranger, Jörg.
Data of mastitis causing factors will be collected on 100 new farms per year in Switzerland: housing, feeding, human-animal-interaction, milking technology, milking hygiene. These data will be connected to the mastitis status of the herd based on quarter milk samples and milk recording data. During a period of at least 2 years these farms will be intensively advised by the project team and their practical veterinarians. Therapies will primarily be based on homeopathic remedies. The development of mastitis causing factors and the mastitis status of the farms is followed up at regular intervals to show possible correlations between (changing) factors and mastitis status. In addition, a network of health data should be implemented for providing information...

Eine randomisierte Vergleichsstudie zur Verwendung von Homöopathie und internen Zitzenversieglern zum Trockenstellen von Milchkühen. Organic Eprints
Maeschli, Ariane; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Notz, Christophe; Walkenhorst, Michael; Heil, Fritz; Klocke, Peter.

Treatment of bovine sub-clinical mastitis with homeopathic remedies Organic Eprints
Klocke, Peter; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Heil, Fritz; Walkenhorst, Michael; Notz, Christophe.
Considering the positive results of homeopathic therapy of bovine mastitis, the presented study should evaluate the effects of two standardized homeopathic methods in sub-clinical mastitis using a prospective randomized double-blind placebo control study design. A number of 124 dairy cows from 17 herds with increased somatic cell count were selected and randomly associated to 5 treatment groups. Two groups received a peroral therapy with (a) a homeopathic combination over 5 days and (b) a single treatment with a homeopathic nosode (Tuberculinum). To each treatment group a placebo control group was established with the same treatment frequency. A fifth group served as an untreated control. The bacteriological cure rate after 4 and 8 weeks was 28% and the...
