Organic fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and most important: many organic fruit growers would prefer not to use any pesticide at all. Growing flowers in order to gain more natural enemies, and hence less pests is a technique called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). Ongoing research in this CORE Organic Plus project aims to collect existing knowledge and generate new knowledge in order to use FAB successfully in orchards. |

The codling moth, Cydia pomonellaL. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) is the key pest in apple growing worldwide. Its increasing resistance against various insecticides, including granulosevirus based plant products, initiate the search for supporting tools for natural control, e.g. the activity of parasitoids. The Chelonine species Ascogaster quadridentata, an egg-larval parasitoid, does not host-feed, but requires sustainable access to sugar resources for nutrition. In the framework of the European CoreOrganic Plus project EcoOrchard (http://coreorganicplus.org/researchprojects/ ecoorchard/)weestablished flowering strips in the rows between trees with the aim to support natural enemies. In adjacent laboratory tests we explored which kind of flowering plants and... |

The use of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) is a promising approach to control the cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi L.. We already demonstrated the high potential of EPN to infect larvae after leaving the cherry for pupation in the soil in laboratory and field experiments. For practice, an application technique is needed, that is both, grower- and EPN friendly. We tested a tractor mounted spray boom for treatment under the canopy area. The achieved rate of EPN in the soil met the expectations. The activity of EPN in soil samples was high after application, but dropped to 60% of the initial activity within one week. Exact forecasting of larval drop from cherries is another major challenge. To obtain basic data, we recorded the phenology of... |

Orchards are perennial cultures, and, especially in organic fruit production it is essential to design and manage orchards in a way which favours beneficials such as insect predators and parasitoids over pests and diseases. As landscape-dominating crops their management affects overall biodiversity in the agricultural landscape. Increasing plant biodiversity and habitats in such a way that beneficials are favoured is called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). The value of FAB for reducing pesticide use in fruit production is generally acknowledged, and many growers try to increase it. However, they lack situation-specific information about how to drive and assess biodiversity to optimize FAB. ECOORCHARD is therefore combining several approaches: (i)... |

In many crops, the intensive use of pesticides causes major problems both for the environment and for natural ecosystem services. Apple is Europe's most frequently produced orchard fruit, requiring high pesticide input to combat the most important apple insect pests, Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini) and Cydia pomonella (L.). Here we sought to control these pests by promoting natural enemies using sown perennial flower strips. We trialled these in the alleyways of organic apple orchards in seven European countries. Visual assessments over two years revealed a higher number of natural enemies on plant parts, and specifically in D. plantaginea colonies on trees, in flower strip plots than on trees in control plots with standard orchard vegetation. Trees in... |

The EcoOrchard project (2015-18) has produced a handbook on FAB assessment in dialogue with growers and advisors and a technical guideline for FAB orchard management. Orchards are perennial cultures, and, especially in organic fruit production, it is essential to design and manage orchards in a way which favours predators and parasitoids over pests. Increasing plant biodiversity and habitats in such a way that beneficial organisms are favoured is called Functional Agrobiodiversity (FAB). The value of FAB for reducing pesticide use in fruit production is generally acknowledged, and many organic fruit growers try to increase it in spite of a shortage of information on FAB, economical and technical challenges and lack of situation-specific, detailed advice.... |

The cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi L., is the major pest of sweet cherries in Europe. Currently, no efficient control method is available and there is the risk of increasing population densities of this pest. Entomopathogenic nematodes caused high mortality of last instar maggots, when entering the soil for pupation, under laboratory and field conditions. First field applications of these biocontrol agents against pupating larvae in 2005 should test their efficacy to reduce pest densities. Accompanying field observa-tions were made to evaluate the degree of natural mortality of the cherry fruit fly during the pupation phase in order to decide if the application of nematodes could substan-tially contribute to control this pest. According to the results... |

Fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and for organic fruit growers options for direct control are relatively few. EcoOrchard, a CORE Organic Plus project (2015-18) tracked EU farmers knowledge of Functional AgroBiodiversity (FAB) and generated new knowledge in order to successfully use FAB in orchards by a joint field experiment across seven countries of perennial flower strips to assess impact on natural enemies, codling moths and yield. The project also established the BIONetwork as a European-wide network of stakeholders for collecting, sharing and improving scientific and practical knowledge and experience in FAB management, and developed simple FAB... |

According to its principles and standards, organic farming particularly rely on natural processes and functional agro-biodiversity (FAB) to benefit from essential ecosystem services. However, these processes are mostly complex, hardly visible and site-specific, thereby making it difficult to assess and manage on-farm. A European survey has been carried out among organic farmers and emphasizes the variability among countries with a diversity of techniques targeting different functional groups according to farming contexts and farmers’ expectations. The different criteria used by farmers to evaluate FABtechniques efficiency and implementation potential clearly illustrate the difficulty to assess the agroecosystem as a whole. |
