Everbearing strawberry cultivars - susceptibility to crown rot Organic Eprints
Parikka, Päivi; Karhu, Saila; Hietaranta, Tarja.
Studies on the production of everbearing strawberry cultivars were started at MTT Plant Production Research in 2007. MTT Horticulture makes trials in tunnel and open fields to study the growth, yield and overwintering of cultivars in northern conditions. Resistance to crown rot is also being tested.

High variability in anthocyanin contents between different blackcurrant varieties Organic Eprints
Hellström, Jarkko; Hietaranta, Tarja; Karhu, Saila; Mattila, Pirjo; Tiirikka, Timo; Veteläinen, Merja.
The results confirm that blackcurrant is a good source of anthocyanins. However, remarkable variation in the anthocyanin content between varieties is evident. The anthocyanin profile is always dominated by four major anthocyanins, yet some variation appears in their relative proportions. The high anthocyanin content is usually most desirable in the blackcurrant products and this study shows that the choice of variety may have a great impact on it.

Background information for breeding: High variation in vitamin C in Finnish currant and gooseberry collections Organic Eprints
Hietaranta, Tarja; Karhu, Saila; Veteläinen, Merja.
Variation in the ascorbic acid content of berries was high. In blackcurrant measured values varied 49−257 mg/100 mg. The highest values were obtained from the greenfruited samples. Values for red and white currants ranged from 53 to 155 mg/100 mg and for gooseberries from 66 to 156 mg/100 mg. This survey provides important background information for use of genetic resources in future breeding programmes, to select crossing parents for high ascorbic acid content.

'Suvetar' and 'Valotar' - new strawberry cultivars Organic Eprints
Hietaranta, Tarja; Parikka, Päivi.
The strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cultivars ‘Suvetar’ and ‘Valotar’ have been released from the breeding programme of MTT Agrifood Research Finland. Both new cultivars overwintered as well as the control cultivars ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Polka’. ‘Suvetar’ overwintered even better than ‘Polka’. ‘Suvetar’ was produced from the cross ‘Polka’ × ‘Emily’. It scored better than the control cultivars for sensory assessed skin resistance. Measured fruit firmness of ‘Suvetar’ was not significantly different from that of ‘Polka’, but was better than ‘Jonsok’. ‘Valotar’ originates from a cross between ‘Jewel’ and ‘Senga Sengana’. Its measured fruit firmness was better than that of ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Polka’. Considering sensory assessments, the good firmness seems to be largely...
