FARMERS' VEG RISK PERCEPTIONS AND ADOPTION OF VEG CROP INSURANCE AgEcon
Bard, Sharon K.; Stewart, Robert K.; Hill, Lowell D.; Hoffman, Linwood A.; Dismukes, Robert; Chambers, William.
Producer survey results are analyzed to determine factors influencing value-enhanced grain (VEG) risk perceptions and VEG crop insurance adoption. VEG production is perceived to be riskier than commodity production. VEG types, input costs, and production problems affect risk perceptions. Factors including previous insurance use impact VEG crop insurance adoption.

U.S. CORN MOVEMENTS, 1985: A PRELIMINARY REPORT OF DATA AgEcon
Fruin, Jerry E.; Halbach, Daniel Walter; Hill, Lowell D.; Allen, Albert J..
This paper presents the results of the corn portion of the 1985 grain flow survey and makes comparisons with 1977 when the previous survey was done. The most significant change from 1977 was the increase in exports from the Pacific Northwest ports from 15 million bushels to over 290 million in 1985. This was accomplished by an increase in rail shipments from Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The decline in European Economic Community demand reduced corn movements through the Great Lakes and Atlantic ports and, consequently, truck movements to those ports. Trucks increased their share of domestic movements. The large 1985 corn crop and subsequent increase in stocks reduced the volume of interstate movements and the length of shipping distances....

Designing U.S. Corn Grades to Reflect End Use Value AgEcon
Reimer, Jeffrey J.; Hill, Lowell D..
The 1986 U.S. Grain Quality Improvement Act introduced an explicit, economic purpose for grades-that they transmit information about end use value-but provided little guidance about what factors to include in grades. We determined which quality characteristics best reflect the processed value of U.S. corn in the case of a Japanese wet miller. Foreign material is the only grade factor closely related to processed value, but a large number of nongrade attributes, many of which reflect the intrinsic properties of corn, are found to vary substantially across shipments and to provide extensive information about value. Recommendations for U.S. grades are made.

THE EFFECTS OF THE MICRO-MARKET STRUCTURE ON ILLINOIS ELEVATOR SPATIAL CORN PRICE DIFFERENTIALS AgEcon
Wenzel, Benjamin P.; Hill, Lowell D.; Garcia, Philip.
Corn price differentials among Illinois elevators can often exceed transportation costs. Using primary data, we examine the effects of micro-market structure variables on the differentials in bids prices offered by Illinois elevators. Our findings suggest the existence of a highly developed, responsive market of competing firms, operating in an industry that can be characterized by monopsonistic competition, and to some extent by seasonally induced market power. Local supply conditions, firm productive efficiency, and their operating practices influence price differentials. Further, firm type, final market destination of the grain, and period of the marketing year affect price differentials.
