THE ALMOST IDEAL SUPPLY SYSTEM AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Holt, Matthew T..
This paper estimates an Almost Ideal Supply System using aggregate U.S. agricultural data. Share equations derived from an indirect production function yield elasticities that are consistent with production theory. A nested test comparing the Almost Ideal Supply System to the Translog Production Function finds little difference between the two models.

A DESCRIPTIVE AND ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF ANNUAL SALARIES, GENDER, EXPERIENCE, AND PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATION HISTORIES WITHIN TOP-RANKED AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS PROGRAMS AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Hilmer, Michael J..
Utilizing an original data set containing annual salaries and peer-reviewed publication histories for 328 faculty members we examine the labor market for academic agricultural economists. Our descriptive analysis shows that while the profession remains male-dominated, females are making significant inroads at the lower academic ranks, the profession is relatively top-heavy, with nearly two-thirds of the faculty in our data set currently holding the rank of full professor, differences in annual salary exist primarily for faculty at Top 6 programs, and then primarily for full professors. Our regression analysis suggests that controlling for publication history there are neither statistically significant negative returns to increased tenure nor...

The Effectiveness of Mandatory and Voluntary Water-Use Restrictions AgEcon
Halich, Greg; Stephenson, Kurt; Hilmer, Christiana E..
Local water suppliers are increasingly faced with implementing policies to address temporary water shortages. This analysis estimates the reductions in residential water-use from the implementation of voluntary and mandatory water-use restrictions programs in Virginia. The level of information and enforcement was found to have a significant influence on the magnitude of water use reductions.

ON THE RETURN TO JOURNAL QUALITY, COAUTHORSHIP AND AUTHOR ORDER WITHIN TOP RANKED AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS PROGRAMS AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Hilmer, Michael J..
Utilizing an original data set containing annual salaries and peer-reviewed publication histories for 326 faculty members from top-ranked Ph.D.-granting programs we examine the labor market for academic agricultural economists. The results suggest that higher quality publications have a greater impact on annual earnings, that sole authored articles have a higher return than multi-authored articles and that no wage premium exists for being the lead author of a non-alphabetic paper.

A COMPARISON OF RESAMPLING TECHNIQUES WHEN PARAMETERS ARE ON A BOUNDARY: THE BOOTSTRAP, SUBSAMPLE BOOTSTRAP, AND SUBSAMPLE JACKKNIFE AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Holt, Matthew T..
This paper compares the finite sample performance of subsample bootstrap and subsample jackknife techniques to the traditional bootstrap method when parameters are constrained to be on some boundary. To assess how these three methods perform in an empirical application, a negative semi-definite translog cost function is estimated using U.S. manufacturing data.

Women Helping Women in Agricultural Economics? Same-Gender Mentoring and Early Career Research Productivity for Agricultural Economics Ph.D.s AgEcon
Hilmer, Michael J.; Hilmer, Christiana E..
This paper is the first to empirically examine the degree to which student outcomes differ across gender-mentorship configurations for agricultural economics Ph.D. recipients. Using a Negative Binomial regression model, we find that female students working with male advisors average statistically fewer total publications in their early careers than men working with male advisors.

A Comparison of Salary Structures between Economics and Agricultural Economics Departments AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Hillmer, Michael J..
This study is the first to empirically assess the difference between the prevailing salary structures in economics and agricultural economics departments at public institutions in the United States. We find that average salaries in economics departments tend to be higher than salaries in agricultural economics departments. Regression analysis suggest that years since Ph.D. explains a greater proportion of salaries in agricultural economics departments while the tier of school explains a great proportion of salaries structure in economics departments. Regression results also suggest that the returns to publications in top 36 and other economics journals is higher in economics departments while publications in core and regional agricultural economics...

Estimating Indirect Production Functions with a More General Specification: An Application of the Lewbel Model AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Holt, Matthew T..
Whereas consumer theory employs several different empirical specifications for estimating indirect utility functions, producer theory has relied on the Translog specification to estimate the indirect production function. In this paper, we apply Lewbel’s more general functional specification and investigate its implications for the estimation of indirect production functions in productivity analysis. An attractive feature of the Lewbel model is that it nests both the Translog and the almost ideal supply system, offering a method to assess the empirical validity of all three specifications. Aggregate U.S. production data are used to examine the performance of the three models in an empirical application.

Programs, Student-Advisor Matches, initial Job Placements and Early Career Productivity for Agricultural Economics Ph.D.s from 1987-2000 AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Hilmer, Michael J..
We examine a unique data set on 1,530 students receiving their Ph.D.s from top-ranked Agricultural Economics programs between 1987 and 2000. The summary statistics suggest that the most productive students are most likely to graduate from top programs while students graduate from lower ranked programs are more likely not to publish. In addition, the more productive students are in their early careers the more likely their dissertation was directed by an elite advisor, and vice versa. Our main finding is that, controlling for program quality, student-advisor match is a significant predictor of early career research productivity. Moreover, controlling for advisor rank greatly reduces the estimated productivity differences due to program quality, ceteris...
