Maize cultivation provides a valuable addition to the feed ration in farms with dairy cows. However, the cultivation of organic maize is challenging and posing risks regarding erosion, leaching of nutrients and soil compaction. Not all sites are suitable for maize cultivation. Therefore, it is important to first study the site before the cultivation. This leaflet provides some general information on how to cultivate organic maize optimally. Different topics about the needs of maize, the sowing, the right crop rotation and pest management are covered. Finally, there is also some information about economic aspects. This leaflet was made for farmers that want to begin cultivating organic maize, but it might also be of use to conventional maize farmers. The... |

Organic cropping of soya beans mainly depends on the successful control of weeds. Hoeing in between the crop rows can be effective but the mechanical control of weeds within the crop row is difficult. Objective of this study was to investigate the effect of three machines and two combinations thereof to control two model weeds seeded directly in the crop row of soya bean. Reduction of the soil cover (%) in the crop row was evaluated after the means were applied and compared to the control treatment (hoeing between the crop rows). Results of two experiments conducted in 2007 and 2008 show that soil cover of companion plants within the crop row can be reduced up to 70 % when compared to the control treatment. Before best treatments can be... |

Currently a large amount of the protein requirement is met by imports. By increasing the cultivation of grain legumes, a bigger part of this requirement could be met by local production. This leaflet provides a tabular overview on the following grain legumes: field beans, field peas, soya beans and sweet lupines. The table contains information about the plants and their needs. It is shown how they should be cultivated, protected and harvested. In addition, some information about profitability and possible uses is provided. This leaflet was made for farmers that want to begin cultivating organic grain legumes, but it might also be of use to conventional grain legume farmers. The information about economic aspects are specific to Switzerland. |

Field beans provide high-protein fodder and, as a legume, provide the soil with nitrogen. In the organic rotation, they are a welcome change from cereals. This leaflet provides a summary on what to consider in order to cultivate organic field beans successfully from seed to delivery. It contains information on the plants, their needs and on how they should be cultivated and harvested. It also shows how to protect the field beans from weed, diseases and pests. In addition, some information about profitability and possible uses is provided. This leaflet was made for farmers that want to begin cultivating organic field beans, but it might also be of use to conventional farmers. The information about economic aspects is specific to Switzerland. |

Field peas are an invaluable preceding crop because they bring a good amount nitrogen into the soil. Unfortunately, they need a lot of water and are susceptible to weeds and aphids. This leaflet provides a summary on what to consider in order to cultivate organic field peas successfully from seed to delivery. It contains information on the plants, their needs and on how they should be cultivated. It also shows how to protect the field peas from weed, diseases and pests. In addition, some information about profitability and possible uses are provided. Oil flax was cropped in Switzerland in former times but seldom today. To investigate new varieties with respect to their agronomic performance and suitability for the production of cold-pressed oil, 15 varieties of spring flax were tested in the years 2005-2007 at one site. They were sown in small plots with four replicates and managed according the rules of Swiss organic farming. Averaged over the years, seed yield of the varieties ranged from 1.4 - 1.9 t/ha. Pressure of pests and diseases were generally low and weeds were controlled successfully by mechanical means. In order to recommend flax varieties for the production of oil, oil quality aspects need to be considered and investigated carefully. |

The total organic area in the EU-27 had an annual average growth rate of nearly 15% from 1998 to 2006 with winter wheat being the most important cereal crop. Wheat yield in organic farming is around 30% to 70% of yield of conventional farming but higher premia for organic wheat may to some extent compensate for this. Bread wheat is grown in a variety of crop rotations and farming systems and four basic organic crop production systems have been defined. Nitrogen deficiency and weed infestation are considered to be the most serious threat in organic wheat production. Organic wheat producers will have to fulfil the technological needs of bakers although the requirements differ widely from small artisan bakers to large enterprises handling the organic bread... |
