Feeding of concentrates to ruminants in organic farming in Switzerland is questionable due to several aspects: (i) suitability for ruminants, (ii) land use change caused by soy cultivation, (ii) organic principles of closed circuits, and (iv) ethical considerations when ruminants directly compete with human nutrition. In the past decades breeding strategies in the dairy sector focused primarily on milk production which led to increased energy requirements. A reduction of concentrates in the ration may thus lead to a more negative energy balance and may be detrimental for health and fertility. Published genotype x feeding system interactions suggest that different breeds, strains or genotypes react differently to different levels of feeding. The aim of... |

On 25 Swiss and German organic dairy farms all fresh cows (a total of 283 cows between 5 and 50 days in milk) were tested weekly for blood- -hydroxybutyrate (BBHB), 121 exceeded the threshold of 1.0 mmol/l BBHB. A total of 84 cows were randomly assigned to three treatments which were given daily, diluted in 700ml fluid divided to two oral administrations for 4 days: placebo (PL), 240g sodium propionate per day (SP) and 240g sodium propionate combined with an extract of seven herbs (27g drug equivalent). Milk acetone (MAC) and BBHB were observed during the administration period and thereafter, in total for two weeks. A reduction of ketone bodies was measured in all three treatment groups. No significant differences between SP and PL arose regarding the... |

Chewing behaviour of 23 lactating Swiss Fleckvieh cows was analysed in order to evaluate the predictivepotential for quantitative dry matter intake in a roughage-based indoor cattle feeding system. Cowswere fed total mixed rations (TMR) based on silages and hay with different concentrate supplements. They were kept in a tie stall enabling individual feed intake measurements. Two measurements wereconducted within one month. Chewing behaviour was recorded with RumiWatch®sensor collars, basedon pressure tubes in the collar’s noseband. Cows were equipped with collars for 96 h per measurementperiod. First 24 h were accounted as adaptation time; data of the subsequent 72 h were used for analysis.Data included ruminating, eating (min/day), rumination boli (n per... |

In organic farming, the production of pork from entire male pigs seems to be the mostpromising alternative to castration, as organic animal husbandry aims at high standards ofanimal welfare and elimination of mutilations. However, previous research on behaviourof entire male pigs was mostly carried out under barren housing conditions and is thus notentirely transferrable to enriched housing conditions. In the present study, we investigatedsingle-sex and mixed-sex groups of entire male pigs and compared them with mixed-sexgroups of castrated male pigs under organic housing conditions. On a commercial farm, 362pigs (average weight 22.7 kg, average age 80 days) were assigned to pens with groups of 20(+1) pigs according to three treatments: single-sex groups... |

Organic pig production strives to provide housing and management conditions that guarantee a high level of animal health and welfare, sustainability, a closed soil–plant–animal cycle and produce high-quality products. This chapter discusses how housing of organic pigs affects welfare and the environment, and outlines how organic production systems are desperately in need of alternatives to feedstuffs that are in direct competition with human nutrition. The chapter examines why certain breeding goals should be adapted to organic conditions, and which health problems are typical for organic housing systems. Finally, the chapter shows how waiving of castration could be a challenge but also a chance for organic pig production and looks ahead to future research... |

While the need for training on-farm assessors in clinical animal assessment has been widely recognised, assessment of husbandry resources is still often regarded as self-explanatory. Within the scope of the international project ProPIG, 7 observers from seven countries were trained by an experienced observer (gold standard) to assess 15 clinical and 11 resource parameters in organic pigs in eight countries. The initial plan was to train and test observers before farm visit 1 and then again after one year before farm visit 2. Both trainings were repeated with all observers due to unsatisfactory agreement, resulting in T1a+b and one year later T2a+b. Agreement with the gold standard was calculated as exact agreement for categorical parameters (e.g. drinker... |

A reduction in gastric ulcers leads to increased animal welfare. Additionally, roughage, such as grass silage, may satisfy the pigs’ need for rooting and lead to a reduction in tail biting. Furthermore, the pigs are occupied with feeding for longer periods of time, which leads to a reduction in boredom. As grass silage has a good nutritional value, it is an ideal supplement to concentrate feed. Note: feeding roughage does not negatively impact meat quality. Practical recommendation • Provide fattening pigs with roughage on a daily basis (minimum 100-300 grams per pig every day) • Grass silage is an ideal roughage: it is very attractive for the pigs due to its taste and consistency. Besides grass silage, grass, hay, and other types of silage have... |

As part of the CoreOrganic II project ProPig, researchers and advisors assessed animal health, welfare and environmental impact on 74 organic pig farms across eight European countries and in different housing systems, including outdoor, indoor and partly outdoor systems. Based on these assessments, improvement strategies were developed together with pig farmers and compiled in this handbook. The recommendations are intended to guide farmers and advisors in developing pig management, housing, and feeding towards optimal animal health and welfare. |

Entire male pigs display more aggressive and sexual behaviour. This might cause a condition of chronic stress and impair their welfare. In order to assess chronic stress in entire and castrated male pigs, as well as effects of providing grass silage as occupational and feed material on behaviour and health, we carried out a 2 × 2 × 2-factorial experiment with 147 growing-finishing pigs. Factors investigated were castration (entire/castrated), chronic intermittent social stress exposure (yes/no) and access to grass silage (yes/no), as well as their interactions. The stress exposure treatment consisted of repeated short-term confrontations and separations. We recorded different behavioural variables, circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol, response to an ACTH... |
