Improvement of biological control by volatile plant compounds Organic Eprints
Holopainen, Jarmo K..
Compared to conventional farming the pest management strategies in organic farming is based on better plant resistance and sustainable cultivation technique that does not destroy the natural enemies of pest insects. Methods that reduce feeding efforts of pests and maintain strong population of predators and parasitoid on crop plant, are the way forward for sustainable plant protection strategies. Volatile compounds extracted from plants and sprayed on crop plants are one of the key factors for the development of these techniques.

Volatile emission from strawberry plants is induced by mite and leaf beetle feeding and methyl jasmonate Organic Eprints
Himanen, Sari; Nuotio, Netta-Leena; Vuorinen, Terhi; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Holopainen, Jarmo K..
We have studied the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from young strawberry plants, cultivars Polka and Honeoye, after feeding by several strawberry herbivores under laboratory conditions. VOC profile of strawberry plants is highly dominated by green leaf volatiles (GLVs), which are released also due to mechanical damage. Our results reveal that strawberry has potential for inducible VOC defence, and this encourages testing the attractiveness of these strawberry VOCs to predatory mites.
