Utilisation of co-streams in the Norwegian food processing industry Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen A.; Honkapää, Kaisu; Saarela, Maria; Slizyte, Rasa; Sterten, Hallgeir; Vikman, Minna; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Food losses occur throughout the entire food chain, from primary production via postharvest handling and storage, to food processing, distribution, retailing and consumption. Globally, food losses account for about one third of the total food produced for human consumption. The aim of this report was to map the production and utilisation of co-streams in the food processing industry in Norway and to discuss possibilities for alternative utilisation based on qualitative aspects of the co-streams, and current legislation. This report is produced by work package 3 in the CYCLE project (2013-2016), “Total utilisation of raw materials in the supply chain for food with a bio-economical perspective”. The CYCLE project aims to improve resource utilisation in the...

In vitro pepsin digestibility and amino acid composition in soluble and residual fractions of hydrolyzed chicken feathers Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen A.; Slizyte, Rasa; Honkapää, Kaisu; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Beta-keratin in poultry feathers is a structural protein that is resistant to degradation due to disulfide and hydrogen bonds. Feather meal can be a valuable feed compound if the digestibility can be increased. The objective of the present study was to analyze the effects of chemical, enzymatic, and pressure-thermic treatments for chicken feathers on solubility, in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD), and amino acid composition of solubilized and residual fractions. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment 1, models for solubility and IVPD were developed including the above factors applying a central composite face-centered design. Addition of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), and autoclaving time affected solubility and IVPD of the...

Case Nortura/Norilia.Improving the utilisation of co-streams in poultry processing Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen A.; Løes, Anne-Kristin; Slizyte, Rasa; Misimi, Ekrem; Carvajal, Ana; Bar, Eirin; Tveit, Guro M.; Wold, Jens Petter; Vikman, Minna; Wikberg, Hanne; Honkapää, Kaisu; Egelyng, Henrik; Alvestrand, Heidi; Nordal, John.
Industrialised chicken production is far from organic agriculture prinicples. Still of interest is a more sustainable utilisation of by-products, e.g. hydrolysation of feathers for proteins, or extraction of food grade oil from chicken bones. Such approaches were studied in the bioeconomy-project "CYCLE" (2013-2017).
