West-Indische Enteropneusten Naturalis

A New Species of Fungia Naturalis
Horst, C.J. van der.
Among the Fungid corals, which Dr. van Oort, the director of the Leyden Museum, has put at my disposal to examine, for which I feel extremely grateful, there were two specimens, which differ so much from all previously recorded forms, that I have no hesitation in describing them as a new species. Fungia moluccensis nov. spec. Corallum oval in shape, heavy; wall with a few slits near the periphery, otherwise solid, aboral surface concave. Margin of the corallum rounded. Upper surface much arched round the axial fossa, at the edge equally thick. Central area of the under surface densely granulated. Ribs only distinct at the periphery, unequal. The larger ones extend farther to the centrum; in the central area they continue for some distance like rows of...

Amniogenesis Naturalis
Horst, C.J. van der.
At the seventh International Zoological Congres at Boston, HUBRECHT (1907) delivered an address “On the foetal membranes of the Vertebrates”. In this lecture he expounded his revolutionary ideas about the origin of the foetal membranes and the phylogenetic history of the vertebrates in general. HUBRECHT was of the opinion that in the ancestors of the Mammalia there was only one embryonic membrane, and that has been retained as the the trophoblast. Its original function was to protect the larva, but when, in the early mammals, intra-uterine development was established, this membrane assumed the function of feeding the embryo as we see in our present day mammals. In order to function properly a connection was then established with the embryonic vascular...

Madreporaria Naturalis
Horst, C.J. van der.
As I have already pointed out in the Narrative of the Voyage (this journal Nr. 23) there is a marked difference between Caracasbay and Spanish Water, the former having clear blue ocean water, the latter being rather muddy. Spanish bay is quite the same as Caracasbay except that it is less sheltered against the tradewinds. Spanish Port is a narrow channel connecting Spanish Water with the bay and shows the transition in the different nature of the water. This difference has a great influence on the fauna as is shown especially by the coral population. For the rest the coralfauna of the West Indies is extensively described by POURTALÈS (III. Cat. Mus. Comp. Zool. No. IV. 1871), VERRILL (Trans. Conn. Ac. Vol. 11. 1901), and VAUGHAN (The stony corals of the...

On the Arrangement of the Septa in Eupsammid Corals Naturalis
Horst, C.J. van der.
While studying the corals, collected by the Siboga-Expedition, I was impressed by the fact, that there is no agreement between different authors concerning the arrangement of the septa in the family Eupsammidae. According to the general law of VON KOCH a new septum is formed invariably between two older ones, and that simultaneously around the entire circumference of the calicle according their classification. Therefore the number of septa of a given order equals the total number of septa of all preceding orders. In the Eupsammidae we do not find this regularity. The septa belonging to the cycles of higher order are not all present. This irregularity has been a subject of study by different authors, the last of whom is VON MARENZELLER ¹).

Narrative of the voyage and short description of localities Naturalis
Horst, C.J. van der.
It was in the spring of 1920 that, especially through the kind co-operation of Prof. SLUITER, I was enabled to carry out a long cherished plan of studying and collecting the rich Fauna of tropical seas. As a conservator at the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam I had handled so much material, collected by the Siboga-Expedition in the East-Indies and, while working over the Madreporaria of this Expedition, I examined so many dead corals, that an increasing desire arose in me to study and collect the rich Fauna of tropical seas and to see live corals myself. After some reflection it became clear that the island of Curaçao was the locality best fitted for my purpose. I had only a short time at my disposal and, as I intended visiting the United States too, I was...
