Changes in the fish fauna of the Oosterschelde estuary: a ten-year time series of fyke catches OMA
Hamerlynck, O.; Hostens, K..
Frequency of occurrence of fish species was monitored on a fortnightly basis in four fykes and a weir in the Oosterschelde estuary from 1979 through 1988. This was done in order to record changes in the fish fauna that may have occurred as a response to the construction of a storm-surge barrier in the mouth of the Oosterschelde (1984-1986) and the concomitant building of compartmentalization dams in the landward part. These compartmentalization dams reduced the freshwater inflow into the system. Principal component analysis using the annual averages in frequency of occurrence suggests a slight shift occurred in the fish community separating a cluster of years 1979-1984 from the cluster 1985-1988. Many of the changes in individual species could be...

Growth, feeding, production, and consumption in 0-group bib (<i>Trisopterus luscus</i> L.) and whiting (<i>Merlangius merlangus</i> L.) in a shallow coastal area of the south-west Netherlands OMA
Hamerlynck, O.; Hostens, K..
In 1988 juvenile bib (<i>Trisopterus luscus</i>) and whiting (<i>Merlangius merlangus</i>) were studied in a shallow coastal area by monthly sampling with fine-meshed nets. 0-group fish of both species are first caught in May. By the end of the first growth season bib reached about 150mm SL (standard length), whiting about 170mm SL. Maximal densities were recorded in June and by the end of the year most fish had left the area. The instantaneous mortality is estimated at 0.008 day-1 (0.77% day-1 for bib and 0.76% day-1 for whiting) for both species. In May both species depended almost exclusively on calanoid copepods. In June and July mysids and amphipods were the...

Changes in the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area of <i>Pomatoschistus minutus</i> and <i>P. lozanoi</i> (Pisces, Gobiidae) OMA
Arellano, R.V.; Hamerlynck, O.; Vincx, M.; Mees, J.; Hostens, K.; Gijselinck, W..
The <i>Pomatoschistus minutus</i> (Pallas) and <i>P. lozanoi</i> (de Buen) stock of the ebb-tidal delta of the former Grevelingen estuary was sampled monthly from September 1992 to October 1993. Sagittae were extracted and the areas of the sagitta and sulcus acusticus were measured with a digitizer. The frequency response and auditory threshold of these two sympatric goby species were determined from the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area (S:O ratio). The S:O ratio of <i>P. minutus</i> increased while in <i>P. lozanoi</i> the S:O ratio was constant with increasing standard length. The average S:O ratio of <i>P. lozanoi</i> was significantly higher than that of <i>P....

The mysid-feeding guild of demersal fishes in the brackish zone of the Westerschelde estuary OMA
Hostens, K.; Mees, J..
The demersal fish fauna of the mesohaline zone of the Westerschelde estuary (south-west Netherlands) was sampled intensively in the period 1990-1992. Almost 500 beam trawl samples were taken in both subtidal (330 samples) and intertidal (144 samples) habitats. These yielded 44 fish species, mostly as juveniles. The area functioned as a nursery for several demersal fish species, and harboured large populations of hyperbenthic mysids. Three gobies, three flatfish, one clupeoid and one gadoid dominated the fish fauna, while three mysid species were important components of the holohyperbenthos. From c. 1500 stomach contents of 25 fish species, 44 prey species were identified, the most abundant of which were also common in the hyperbenthal. The demersal fish...

The mobile epifauna of the soft bottoms in the subtidal Oosterschelde estuary: structure, function and impact of the storm-surge barrier OMA
Hostens, K.; HamerlyncK, O..
Data on the mobile epifauna of the Oosterschelde estuary, collected by beam trawl, were compiled from several studies. Multivariate statistical techniques brought out the fact that the Oosterschelde, when compared with neighbouring areas, has a characteristic epibenthic fauna. Diversity as measured by Hill's diversity numbers N through N +infinite, is higher for the Oosterschelde (N1=4.5) than for the Voordelta (N1=3.5) and the Westerschelde (N1=2.2).Four epifaunal communities can be distinguished within the Oosterschelde, the two most seaward communities being the richest. Annual production is estimated at about 6 gADW m-2...

Fish species of the lower Zeeschelde (Belgium): a comparison with historical checklists OMA
Van Damme, P.A.; Hostens, K.; Ollevier, F.P..
In the 19th century approximately 40 fish species (excluding freshwater species) were recorded in the lower Zeeschelde between the Dutch/Belgian border and Antwerpen. In comparison with the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century the total number of fish species in the Beneden-Zeeschelde has decreased considerably. The present checklist (1991-1993) of fishes of the lower Zeeschelde (excluding freshwater species) contains only 26 species. The fish community is composed of marine species (13), catadromous species (3), estaurine residents (9) and one anadromous fish species. Besides, 6 freshwater fis species have presently been recorded. The distribution of diadromous fishes, estaurine residents and freshwater fishes is probably greately affected...
