The Workshop on the Development of Quantitative Assessment Methodologies based on Life-history traits, exploitation characteristics, and other relevant parameters for data-limited stocks (WKLIFE) focuses on the provision of sound advice rules for data-limited stock (DLS) assess-ments that are within the ICES MSY framework. This ninth workshop was convened to further address the challenges to the evidence base for the provision of ICES advice with specific refer-ence to DLS. The reviewers’ report of WKLIFE VIII (ICES, 2018) was used as the basis to draft ICES technical guidance on advice rules for stocks in Categories 3 and 4 following the meeting in 2018. The draft document reflected the conclusions of the WKLIFE VIII meeting report but in order to provide... |

The main terms of reference for the The ICES Working Group for the Assessment of Demersal Stocks in the North Sea and Skagerrak (WGNSSK) were: to update, quality check and report relevant data for the working group, to update and audit the assessment and forecasts of the stocks, to produce a first draft of the advice on the fish stocks and to prepare planning for bench-marks in future years.. Ecosystem changes have been analytically considered in the assessments for cod, haddock and whiting in the form of varying natural mortalities estimated by the ICES Working Group on Multi Species Assessment Methods (WGSAM). Benchmarks and Inter-benchmarks in 2018/2019 No full benchmarks were conducted during 2019 for WGNSSK stocks. However, there were sev-eral... |

The Working Group on the Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms (WGITMO) has contributed several major achievements to the ICES vision, including the first ICES Viewpoint on Biofouling and its source document, two Cooperative Research Reports, and numerous publications related to ToRs, and the continued population of the AquaNIS database. During the three-year cycle (2017–2019), the scientific experts of this working group, representing 21 countries, met and worked collaboratively with PICES, CIESM and other ICES working groups and international organizations. They have focused their scientific understanding of marine ecosystems to provide information (e.g. national reports, contributing to the AquaNIS database, ToR a), knowledge and advice on the... |

WGDEEP gives advice according to an advice schedule where, in short, half of the stocks advice is given in year y and the other half has advice in year y+1. The exception from this schedule is stocks from ICES Division 5.a (Iceland) that have advice annually. Available time-series for international landings and discards, fishing effort, survey indices and biological information were updated and for all stocks and are presented in Sections 4–15 of the report. In response to a special request from the EU on the added value of having small TAC for greater silver smelt in subarea 7 the meeting evaluated available information. The EU TAC, currently covering subareas 5, 6 and 7, does not correspond to the stock unit evaluated by ICES which is greater silver... |

ICES WGEF meets annually, with advice for a subset of stocks drafted in alternating years. No special requests were received this year. Work in 2015 focused on those stocks for which it was an advisory year: Skates in the North Sea ecoregion, skates in the Azorean and Mid Atlantic Ridge ecoregion, Portuguese dogfish, leafscale gulper shark, kitefin shark, catsharks (Scyliorhinus canicula and Galeus melastomus), smooth-hounds (Mustelus spp.), tope, porbeagle, basking shark and angel shark. |

The ICES Working Group on comparative analyses between European Atlantic and Mediterranean Ecosystems to move towards an Ecosystem-based Approach to Fisheries (WGCOMEDA) recently completed its second three-year cycle. WGCOMEDA was established in 2014 and works in cooperation with other groups within the ICES Integrated Ecosystem Assessments Steering Group (IEASG). The working group objectives are: i) to set the analytical and data framework to develop common Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEA) exercises, ii) to advance several ongoing comparative studies on ecosystems stability, and iii) to frame comparative size- and traits-based approaches in both demersal and benthic ecosystems. To fulfil these objectives, the group focused on: 1. Providing a more... |

The workshop on age reading of Saithe (Pollachius virens) (WKARPV) was held in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, from 26 to 29 May 2015. The meeting was co-chaired by Kélig Mahé (France) and Jane A. Godiksen (Norway), and included eight age readers from four countries. The objectives of this first workshop were to review, document and make recom-mendations on current methods of aging saithe (Pollachius virens). This workshop was preceded by an otolith exchange in 2013, which was undertaken using WebGR. Participants who hadn’t taken part in the exchange were asked to annotate the images in the months prior to the workshop, however, due to problems with accessing WebGR only a limited amount of the readers managed to do this in time. The otolith collection included... |

The purpose of the WKFEA was to discuss the current ICES advice1 framework, consider options for future assessment and advice needs and draft a roadmap towards recommendations for a new or adapted advice framework for fishing opportunities and potentially other anthropogenic pressures on European eel. The current Advice given on eel was considered to be in accordance with the precautionary ap-proach as applied by ICES. However, there is room for improvement in the clarity of the current Advice given to make it relative to fishing opportunity, whilst considering the other anthropo-genic impacts in another section of the advice sheet. While there is a need to define reference points to inform managers of the state of the stock and with respect to recovery,... |

The ICES Scallop Assessment Working Group (WGScallop) met in Aberdeen (2016), Belfast (2017) and York (2018) with an average of 16 participants from 8 countries. The main terms of reference for the working group were to update and provide data and exchange knowledge on the various scallop fisheries in the Northeast Atlantic region. This included the compilation of available scallop fisheries data and the production of maps to better identify stock boundaries and inform spatial management. The WG also considered the various assessments for scallop stocks and reviewed the recent developments in the English Channel. The scallop stocks in the Baie ds Seine have experienced extremely large recruitment events over the past few years and the group has discussed... |

The Working Group on Multispecies Assessment Methods (WGSAM) met in Reykjavik, Iceland, 10–14 October 2016. In this tenth report of the pan-regional WGSAM, work fo-cused on four (B, E, F, G) of the multi-annual ToRs. Based on their knowledge, participants provided an updated inventory of progress of multispecies models in ICES Ecoregions (ToR A), noting those regions where no infor-mation was available. Reporting on ToR A was scarce compared to previous years, partly because recent relevant work was reported against ToR E and G instead. A Key Run (ToR B) of the Baltic Sea Ecopath with Ecosim (NS-EwE) model was present-ed and reviewed in detail by 4 WGSAM experts, and approved by the group following implementation of changes agreed in plenary at the meeting... |
