| A 49-month-old Holstein cow with anorexia, tachypnea, enlarged peripheral lymph nodes, and difficulty standing up was suspected of bovine leukosis. Hematological examination revealed lymphocytosis with the presence of neoplastic cells. Increased total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, isozymes of LDH-2 and LDH-3 activities and thymidine kinase activity were observed. Cytological findings of fine needle aspiration of subiliac lymph nodes indicated lymphosarcoma. Histopathology and antibody analysis confirmed the diagnosis of enzootic bovine leukosis, a B-cell bovine lymphoma caused by bovine leukemia virus. | 5歳6カ月齢のホルスタイン種乳牛が鼻出血，眼球突出および黒色便を呈したため，地方病性牛白血病を疑った．し かし，生前の臨床検査では牛白血病の確定診断はできず，病理組織学的検査により鼻腔内骨肉腫と診断された．本症例では，明瞭な呼吸器症状や顔面の変形といった鼻腔内腫瘍を疑わせる所見が乏しく，生前診断が困難であった． Enzootic bovine leukosis was suspected in a Holstein cow aged 5-years and 6-months, as it displayed symptoms of epistaxis, proptosis, and melena. However, clinicopathological findings failed to confirm a diagnosis of bovine leukosis, and histopathological findings revealed a nasal osteosarcoma. As the case lacked typical findings of nasal tumor such as sneezing and facial deformity, a nasal tumor diagnosis would have been difficult. |

| 犬のE.canisおよびA.ρhagocytophilum感染状況を明らかにするため，従来法である蛍光抗体法(IFA)，および組換え主要膜表面蛋白質を抗原とした酵素抗体法を原理とする新規の特異抗体検出キットを組合せて全国的血清疫学調査を行った. IFAによるスクリーニング検査では1,206検体中64頭(5.3%)がE.canis 20倍以上の抗体価を示したが，これら64頭は特異抗体検出キットではすべてE.canis陰性であり，E. canis以外の近縁種に感染していたと考えられた.いっぽうIFAでA.ρhagocytophilumに対して20倍以上の抗体価を示したものは1,206検体中3頭(0.2%)であった.うち1頭は特異抗体検出キットでもA.phagocytophilum陽性を示し，日本にもA.phagocytophilumに感染した犬 がいることが示唆された.しかし，抗体陽性犬に臨床症状は認められず，病原性との関連は不明であった. | Two dogs that exhibited sudden astasia, anorexia and fever higher than 40°C were suspected of having Lyme disease in July 2011. Clinical symptoms gradually improved with antibiotic treatment in both cases. Polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis revealed Borrelia garinii DNA fragments in the peripheral blood in the acute disease phase. Serological tests, including enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot analysis, showed an increased IgG antibody titer against Borrelia pathogens in one of the dogs. These findings suggested that diagnosis of the two dogs was Lyme disease related to B. garinii infection. |

| 17日齢のホルスタイン種雌子牛が，神経症状を示した. 病畜は頭部を左後方に折り曲げて伏臥姿勢を示し，時折自力で起立したがすぐに倒れ歩行不能であった. 神経学的検査では右の対光反射，威嚇瞬き反射，眼瞼反射， および音響耳介反射が消失していた. ビタミンB1，およびデキサメサゾンの投与により第7病日に歩行可能となったものの左への斜頸・旋回が認められ，神経学的検査所見に改善は認められなかった. 第7病日に病理解剖を行い，肉眼的には橋の断面右側に直径1cm大の膿瘍を認め，嫌気培養にてFusobacterium necrophorumが検出された. 左側への斜頸，聴覚の消失等の脳神経疾状は，橋の右側の膿瘍により内耳神経等の脳神経核が圧迫された結果出現した聴覚障害，平衡障害のためと考えられた. | 2歳5カ月齢ホルスタイン雌乳牛が胸垂冷性浮腫，頸静脈拍動を呈し，心音聴取困難および心電図各波低電位所見から拡張型心筋症が疑われた．右胸腔には赤色変性性漏出液が多量に貯留しており，また超音波検査により心嚢水貯留を認めた．病理解剖の結果，心嚢は直径60cm大に腫大して血様心嚢水の貯留を認めたが，炎症あるいは腫瘍は認められず，血様心嚢水貯留の原因については不明であった．ただし右肩部に壊死巣を認めたことから，転倒等胸腔に強い衝撃を受けた可能性があると考えられた．心嚢水貯留が認められる場合には，心嚢腔内への出血も考慮すべき疾病のひとつであることが考えられた． A Holstein cow (two years and five months old) with jugular vein distension and non-inflammatory edema in the brisket showed decreased heart sound and abnormal waves on an electrocardiogram. | An 8-month-old Holstein heifer with cervical enlargement was suspected of thymic lymphosarcoma given clinical signs of depression, tendency to lie down, cervical mass, jugular vein distension, conjunctival hyperemia, and ruminal tympany. Unilateral Horner’s syndrome was also observed. Increased serum total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), LDH isozyme (LDH-2, and LDH-3) and serum thymidine kinase activity were observed. | Expression of six selective genes in peripheral blood cells was evaluated as diagnostic biomarkers for enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) by using 10 EBL and 15 clinically healthy cattle. The clinically healthy cattle generally showed lower gene expression levels. Although wide variations of gene expression were found in some clinical cases of EBL, 4 and 5 among 10 EBL cattle showed higher expression of interleukin 2 receptor gene (IL2R) and Wilms’ tumor gene (WT1), respectively. Expression of IL2R in peripheral blood cells in EBL cattle was statistically increased; however, the lower sensitivity and higher variation in the gene expressions among clinical cases of EBL would be problems as diagnostic biomarkers. |

| In peripartum dairy cows, insulin resistance (IR) increases to adjust the direction of energy to lactation after calving. To investigate the effect of prepartum IR on postpartum reproductive performance, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) was applied to 15 cows at 3 weeks (Pre21) and 10 days (Pre10) before the predicted calving date. Blood glucose area under the curve (AUCglu) within 120 min after administration of 0.05 IU/kg-BW insulin was calculated. | 北海道東部(道東)の放牧地における牛の小型ピロプラズマ感染りスク低減要因について調査した。道東ではシュルツェマダニ，ヤマトマダニ，ダグラスチマダニが採取され， PCRにより小型ピロプラズマ遺伝子断片が検出され，これらのマダニがベクターとなりうる可能性が考えられた。エゾシカからは多数のマダニが回収され，小型ピロプラズマのベクターを牛の放牧地内へ持ち込むという意味で小型ピロプラズマ感染リスクに関わる動物と考えられた。また，放牧管理体制との関連では，野生動物侵入防止柵の設置，あるいは牧柵周辺の下草刈りが小型ピロプラズマ感染リスク低減に有効である可能性が考えられた。 Factors to decrease risk for Theileria orientalis infection of cattle in pastureland in Eastern Hokkaido were investigated. | チミジンキナーゼはDNA合成に関わる酵素の一つであり，近年牛白血病の発症マーカーとして利用できることが報 告されている.今回，牛白血病ウイルス汚染農場において，本酵素の活性を測定することにより，牛白血病罹患牛の早期摘発を試みた.その結果，臨床症状は示さなかったものの，地方病性牛白血病に罹患していた10歳9カ月齢のホルスタイン種雌牛を摘発できた.牛白血病ウイルス汚染牛群における本酵素活性の測定が，地方病性牛白血病罹患牛の早期摘発に臨床上有用であることが本研究により示唆された. | A 17-year-old, gray Thoroughbred gelding was presented with recurrent epistaxis following exercise for over one year. Multidetector-row computed tomographic (MDCT) examination of the head performed under general anesthesia indicated the presence of malignant melanoma. MDCT examination revealed the exact location and size of masses in the right guttural pouch first identified by endoscopy and in the left guttural pouch unidentified by endoscopy. | 8カ月齢ホルスタイン種乳牛が起立不能を呈した.右下顎リンパ節相当部に腫瘤を認めたため，午白血病を疑い血液検査および針吸引細胞診を実施したが，確定診断に至らなかった.病理解剖においては，環椎および胸椎にも腫瘤が存在し脊髄を圧迫していた.病理組織学的に，腫瘍細胞はBLA-36抗原陽性であり，B細胞性リンパ腫と診断した. | Degeneration of the optic pathway has been reported in various animal species including cattle. We experienced a case of bilateral optic tract degeneration characterized by severe gliosis in a Japanese black cattle without any obvious visual defects. To evaluate the significance, pathological nature and pathogenesis of the lesions, we examined the optic pathway in 60 cattle (41 Japanese black, 13 Holstein and 6 crossbreed) with or without ocular abnormalities. | 体表リンパ節の腫脹, 末梢血中における異型リンパ球出現を伴うリンパ球数の著増などの典型的な牛白血病症状を示していなかったことから, それぞれアミロイドーシス, 胸膜炎, 心疾患が疑われた3頭のホルスタイン種乳雌牛を病理解剖したところ, いずれも牛白血病と診断された. 血液検査および身体検査において著変が観察されない場合でも, 難診断時には鑑別診断リストに牛白血病を加えるべきであると考えられた. |
